Hello all! I am a KTM owner, but please don't hold that against me!
My friend has an 03 1150 GS, he hasn't got internet access, tight Yorkshire man... so asked me to help solve a problem:
His paralever bearings have gone again. Changed by a BMW dealer in Shipley about 14 months ago, and again (under warranty) about 6 months ago at a dealer in York. He does lots of miles - about 14000 a year, but is thinking that it's possibly a duff bike.. The bike has done about 44000 mile now.
The Q is - are they just badly fitted at these dealers? And Q2 is do other owners have to change the bearings often?
Do you reckon he should get them replaced again and just sell it? Or get another dealer to fix the fault and see how long they last?

I wondered if there's another fault causing this one, or perhaps they don't relace the pins etc inside the needle rollers (I think they are needles).

Many thanks if you can help with this enquiry.
Kind regards
Col

Hi Col, welcome to UKGSer ... we have a fair few KTM riders here so dont worry about posting, you'll be most welcomed to do so.

Take a look at the link below, you'll see we do have a section for KTM owners found further down the forum under the title of 'Our Other Bikes'

http://www.ukgser.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=204

It might be worth posting the same query in the 1150 section of the forum ... if you wish I could shift your post over for you.

Let me know either way.

Duchess :)

Thanks, please copy post over

look for Steptoes posts... if he has any to say on the subject it will usually be right

Please don't burden me. I can be as wrong as the next man when diagnosing over the internet.

First thing - Main dealers always replace as a matter of routine :nenau

Paralever bearings can be adjusted instead of replacing them every time. I've been adjusting my own bikes paralever bearings for the last 40K miles :D I feel a tiny bit of play about every 7K-10K and nip them up a touch. You don't even have to remove the rear wheel, i adjust mine with the wheel in place through the spokes. A 2 minute job.

The only problem is if they've been left with excess play for any length of time, as this damages the bearings so any adjustment is only a short term fix.

Of course, this will mean your tight yorkshire friend will have to part with some money on tools. He could be the answer the governments looking for to get some money back into circulation to solve credit crunch .

Many thanks!

Hi Steptoe
Very interested in the reply, he will check out the manual - Clymer and CD-BMW. Hopefully will nip it in the bud!
