Hello! Returning to life as an Airhead.

Thanks.

I gave Vines a shout but they were too busy to get it done so took it to FCL in Cranleigh. They broke the puller doing it but got them out fortunately. Seems they had been wound up mega tight in an effort to compensate for how shagged they were!

You don't need a puller, heat it up and they will drop out, DAMHIK!

Arkwright, I don't think these ones would have though we did consider attempting heat alone. They had been wound in mega tight.

Reminded me of the pain of the kind GS'ers of the Airhead Weekend a few years ago that helped me to change my steering head bearings. Definitely wouldn't have managed that alone!

Just going through the motions of changing all the fluids; fitting new brake pads; a new battery; and cleaning up the loom whilst I await the arrival of a timing light to fit and set up the electronic ignition.

It's got a Fournales air shock on the back that's probably due either a rebuild or replacement along with the forks which are definitely on their way out too. However, touch wood, they should both suffice for the time being. I am aware that the forks in particular are difficult to rebuild though the plan will be set them up as per stock. Any advice on that?

I've got some matte black adhesive vinyl which I'm going to use to make new decals for the tank in an effort to avoid knee rub through the original paint.

Will probably look back at it all in time and wish that I'd just bought an 1100 or 1150 instead :D

If you need knee pads self adhesive rubber sheet made for that purpose isnt hard to find and IMHO looks better than vinyl.

In cleaning up the original loom and re-taping it all the other day I managed to break a seemingly irreparable connector to the black box type, fuse box and wondered what people's thoughts on the unit itself might be? I.e, should I source an OEM style replacement or would it be worth going for something more modern?

Ultimately I want to be able to run a DIN/Hella style socket for GPS and maybe some auxiliary lights too if the output of the alternator will allow it.

Vehicle Wiring Products stock 'continental type' fuse boxes, including a four way which looks to share similar dimensions, and wonder if that might make for a decent alternative.

There was a thread on here recently about these little 2 fuse boxes.

I'll see if I bookmarked the suppliers and post again.

Thank you. I'm just wondering whether it would be best to replace the box with an OEM item and to mount a second, auxiliary, fuse box for the extra kit OR if I should just update the whole thing and keep all the fuses central in a more modern housing.

Any thoughts?

G/S engine bars

I do have a pair of newly powder coated engine bars available if you're interested. They do have some fairly heavy pitting, mainly on the underside so you won't really see it once on the bike. But they are good and strong and will fulfil the purpose. And they'll be cheap! PM me if interested.
Dave.

Heated grips AND hand guards

I picked up a set of Acerbis wraparound style hand guards from a forum member and have faced some issues in fitting them. They were previously fitted to an R80G/S and so I am confident that they are the correct ones.

The issue is that my bike has the genuine heated grips fitted, with the wiring running through the handlebars. These, as many will be aware, are fitted with the wiring for the heating elements at the beginning of the bar end.

Anyway, I found this chap's blog post which seems to go some way in resolving the issue. However, I do not have Touratech modified bolt and so will have to figure out a way to engineer the standard Acerbis item. Joy :D

Thought it might of use to people facing a similar dilemma of wanting to run proper hand guards and heated grips. :thumb2

I've just replied to that post. Don't use OE heated grips. Use normal ones and heated foils. I've put a link to a shop you can get them from in the other thread. Or click here.

Getting there!

So after a lot of messing around and balancing of other commitments, the bike is nearly there.

Just gone in for MOT today so looking forward to hearing what else has gone wrong with it :D

The electronic ignition has made a big difference. The throttle pick up is considerably better than ever and it runs much smoother.

Things on the to do list include repainting the tank and panels. I'd far prefer to keep the original paint but it's no longer serving the function of protecting the tank and so needs must. Otherwise, I intend to fit some wraparound crash bars and LED spots in due course.

Thanks for the advice, as ever.
