I know this probably isn't the right spot on the forum to post this query, but I'm looking to get a helmet cam and wondered if anyone is using one and if anyone has any recommendations. I'm looking at the Contour Roam and Drift Ghost (GoPro is out. It's the wrong flippin layout! ).

My primary reason to get this is the same reason people have them in their cars. London is a nightmare these days and cyclists have become worse than the cars! Having a number plate and am insurance policy means we'll be too blame not the cyclist if something happens!

Sorry if I sound cynical but you wouldn't BELIEVE half the things I witness, especially if you live outside a big city. I'm sure anyone on here riding in London in the rush hours will vouch for this!

ps. I'm a cyclist myself (spent many years racing) and i still cycle. So I'm well versed in the do's & don'ts! :rob

Contour have gone belly-up

There's a thread on cams- only 2 days old (not in the oilheads section, though............... funnily enough)

I did do a search but nothing useful came up. I'll have another look.

Cheers

I went for the Drift Ghost HD and am very happy with it.

Picture quality is not quite as good as the GoPro but for me it is better in every other way.

Mounting is easy using a sticky mount for your helmet. You can use a strong velcro to fine tune fore and aft positioning if mounting on top to avoid capturing your speedo in the picture! Monuting on the side is also good and the lens is able to rotate to get a straight picture.

Battery does really last 3 hours which is very good for commuting. It is also waterproof if using the correct battery cover. It comes with two battery covers and the other one has holes for mic and usb connections, sealed with rubber plugs. You can film under water.

The wrist wireless remote is very good and flashing LEDs let you know if it is recording. It has a really good feature for saving memory space when recording. You can set it up to constantly record to temp memory and save the past 5 minutes, the current 5 minutes and the next five minutes to the memory card only when you press record. I use this on the commute so only press record to capture an incident after it happened. Only risk is if you got knocked off and couldn't or forgot to record what just happened.

It has a universal tripod screw mount so I bought a screw in rubber ball mount, suction cup and connecting arm from RAM MOUNT and use it in the car to record when driving.

It has a good mic connection and if you wanted to do blogs, this is the best cam in my opinion. I have found putting a foam ear plug over the mic eliminates wind noise. Search Baron Von Grumble on youtube as an example. He gives you a discount code for actioncameras.co.uk

If you are not sure you are welcome to look at mine, just pm me. I would say just go ahead and buy it. You can easily sell it again and get nearly all your money back.

I have a RoadHawk mounted on my bars and connected to bike for power. It records in a constant loop (about 4 hours long with the SD card I have in mine but you could but a bigger card in and have a longer loop). It's connected via the ignition so turns on and off when the bike does. Total fit and forget.

It's really small and neat; not that expensive so I only remove it if I leave the bike overnight.

Video isn't Hollywood quality but is more than good enough for recording traffic "incidents".
