Helmet cleaning/sanitising

[getting older]

After 3 months of continuous wear in hot & sticky conditions my bmw system helmet is "disgusting" tried filling it water & soap and having a good swill but it still stinks to high heaven. So do buy new innards (expensive & may not work) or buy new lid (very expensive) Any recommendations?

I know it doesn't solve your problem now, but I find a thin balaclava useful.

It's easily washable, and when I don't shave it stops the stubble rubbing on the helmet lining.

strip out all the stuff and I used milton, then left the lot in indirect sunlight to dry out... seems to have worked

Can you not wash the innards ?... I took mine out of my Arai and put them in the machine with all the undies and it came out like new ...

As a last resort seal it up in a plastic bag and pop it in the freezer for a few days

Works well with smelly gloves and trainers, but can mess up some glues, especially if the trainers are damp (just washed)

But it does reduce the pong by killing some bacteria, surgical spirit is very good if can be applied safely, but i'd be unsure of that in a helmet.

If its an Arai just remove the liner and follow the washing instructions. The service guys only use water from a spray and a microfibre cloth on the shell and visor.

Its worth buying an Arai just to watch the guys service them for nothing at the bike meets. They sometimes ask for a donation, at the TT this year it was the Joey Foundation.

Shep is right....the smell is caused by bacteria, in the same way that sweat is turned to BO by bacteria.

Sticking a smelly helmet in the freezer will, in theory, kill the smell
