Called for fuel at a Shell garage yesterday & was told to take my helmet off before they would serve me - I politely asked why? I was told that they needed to see everyone's face on camera so I asked - if someone in a Hijab or Burka pulled up would they be asked to do the same? No came the reply! Am I missing something here guys? Neither Hijab Burka is a mandatory requirement of the Muslim faith, why should I as a law abiding biker, be singled out as a bad person likely to steal fuel & required to remove my helmet? Should I take this further? has anyone else?

Many moons ago this happened at a local garage....... I wasn't involved.......... A week later a load of bikers turned up and hogged and the pumps for an hour or so apparently.

Being a busy garage, I bet they lost a few quid................ Not sure if the helmet policy was revoked. I'll have to go there soon to find out.

If you use a card fraudulently then they can't identify you.... If you use a card fraudulently the card company won't pay for the petrol... The petrol station loses out.... But no let's make this another tedious race discrimination thread.... If you don't like it buy a Jerry can....

What if your paying by cash? JJH

Not racist to expect all to be treated in the same manner? Anyone covering their face should either be accepted as equals, or turned away. its highly unlikely that most bikers would be any more dishonest than any other strand of society, the bikers I associate with are generally more honest than most. has anyone taken this inequality up with Shell etc & had a sensible response?

So, having a senior Shell manager as a mate, I can say this is under review.

The real reason they need to see your face is that petrol can only be purchased by someone over 16 years - so, just like selling booze or fags, the garage can get a substantial fine if they authorise the pump to an under 16.

A mandate was issued by Shell HQ that all motorcyclists should show their face. The manager that signed this off was not satisfied that someone riding a bike has to by law be over 16 years. Their paranoia was that someone breaking the law might buy petrol leading to fines and loss of licence plus bad publicity.

It seems that this has had an unexpected backlash and employees are complaining about dealing with hostile motorcyclists. Petrol stations have a high staff turnover of staff anyway and this is a contributing factor.

So, in the new year, said friend has been tasked with reviewing their policy to a) comply with the law so that staff & businesses won't cop a fine b) keep customers happy c) keep staff happy.

My suggestion wa to have pay at pump at all stations - it is simple to check age as you only accept cards available to over 16s. Shell doesn't like this as punters don't go into the shop to buy groceries, snacks etc.

I have also said that letting someone have the petrol and then asking them to remove their helmet to enter the shop does not solve the "over 16" problem as they already have the petrol. Apparently, some retailers don't want people in the shops wearing helmets as staff feel intimidated, the soft cúnts.

This has led to quite a few alcohol fuelled arguments with my mate but at least he is doing something about it now!

Perhaps I should open a thread for updates on developments, although that might get the mate into trouble as he tells me stuff not in the public domain (he announced this review in a Facebook group, hence me sharing it here). I could keep the thread locked to stop it getting to 20 pages.

What I don't understand is why they ask you to remove your helmet when you go into the kiosk to pay, AFTER you have already put the fuel in. Common sense would dictate that they don't "release" the pump in the first place until you have taken your helmet off, so that have got your face on CCTV as well as the bike.

OR.....get a flip front!

Just don't remove it. Simple. Offer to pay. Hold up money in front of camera. Make sure there is no room for dispute that you have offerd to pay. They are hardly going to refuse payment. It helps if you trow in a few foreign words. Fucking fuckwith oxigen thieves. JJH

This is not a discussion I was going to get involved in but the Shell 'over 16' line -

does not hold for me, how are the staff supposed to know id a customer is over 16 just by looking at him / her.

Why do you think they have initiated a review? The current system does not work. They don't want to go the same way as asking people for ID as with booze purchases but need to demonstrate they are trying to comply with the law.

don't know many 16 year olds with a GS? what differentiates car drivers as holding a licence / being over 16? we know how many cant even be arsed to insure their cars / apply for a B
British licence as is the law?

"

Don't make sense - they've already "authorised" the pump by letting you use it, so they are already guilty of a potential fine. If they then discover that you are under 16 when and if you take your helmet off, they have two choices :-
1. Take your money
2. Report you and syphon the petrol back out of your tank.

Tough call for the poor till attendant!!!!
