Helmets - best anti-mist? Not System 5 :D

Well I decided to bite the bullet and bought a shiny new silver (grey?) XR1000 with the included pinlock. I decided that £65 for the System 5 'double glazed' visor would be yet another attempt to justify what is IMO a poorly designed lid. I did look for a Lazer Revolution but Lazer apparently have only one dealer in Scotland (70 miles away), the helmet no longer comes with the built in fog mask, the dealer wasnt even sure if the visor was 'double glazed', and it only came in black. I'll report back on how the XR fairs compared to the System 5. Thanks to all who answered

Just a thought I polish the inside of my visor every few days with a little washing up liquid. I ride all the year round and have no probs with misting.

I thought this had salt in it which removed the anti-mist/scratched the visor?

Anyway, the XR1000 is fantastic, no misting what so ever

Right, I've suffered enough and the System 5 must go. It's a decent enough summer helmet but the lack of anti-mist features in the design is a serious safety hazard imo. Does anyone know of ANY helmet that will remain mist free in all weather? I ride in mixed conditions all year round and travel 80 miles a day, mainly inner city and slow B roads where misting can be a real problem. I've already made my views known regarding the failings of this helmet (search for the poll if you can be bothered) so I dont want to hear from the (few) 'It's OK for me' (fair weather?) types. I'm thinking Shoei with pinlock etc. I've no particular budget and just want a good well designed and mist free lid.

Shoei or Arai with a pinlock visor system, this is the best thing I've found and I've tried most of them!!!!

I have had the Caberg Justissimo flip for about 6 months (after an Arai Quantum which would mist up if there was any moisture in the air in the next county...) and it surprises me with its overall performance for a £145 helmet. It has never misted up on me - 2 hour torrential downpour on the A34/M40/M42 recently and then Wales this weekend with early morning fog. The anti-mist coating seems very effective - maybe it will go with time... Flip down sunshade also a boon with the low sun...

I must confess to a habit.... I keep buying helmets. Since I quit smoking a couple of years ago, I justify the cost to myself by not spending 5 quid a day killing myself. I wear specs full time, and have only recently tried contact lenses. I commute 30 miles a day on a mixture of Motorway, dual carriageway, A road and inner city urban streets. Also do at least 2 European jaunts each year, so have all round demands.
OK. In the last 3 years I have bought, rode in, moved on or kept the following:

X-Lite flip helmet. Crap opening lever, smelled funny after a few weeks.Very light but too damned noisy, even with earplugs. Moved it on
Schuberth S1. Fantastic lid, ultra quiet but had the problems with replacement visors, after 4 changes I had a row with the retailer and got my money back. (Rode back from NI in the dark via Stranraer (A75 antone? Trucks, tractors, road full of cow shite, with the visor up coz the coating peeled off and starburtsed in the rain and sodium lights!
Shoei Z1. Beautifully made, but cocked up by buying the wrong size, so moved it on. Pity that, a really nice lid.
Schuberth C2 Concept. All round super lid at first. After riding in all weathers
got fed up with the weight of it and the crap lining on the inside of the visor (again). Moved it on.
Shoei Syncrotec 2. Nosiy, rattly, absolute shite ventilation, but with a pinlock it redeemed itsef. Always found it a good fit and the single chin button makes it a doddle to open. Still wear it now and again coz it's like my favourite old boots. Over 10K miles with this one now.
BMW SportIntegral. Yeh, I know, another Schuberth. Local BM dealer selling 'em off for £70, couldn't resist ( 2 weeks ciggie money )
Again, superbly made, chin cover keeps draughts out, great with specs, superb ventilation, but that feggin awful coating on the inside of the visor again. When it does mist up, the coating seems to hold the mositure and reamins misty the rest of the lourney.
Arai Astro J. Sorry I bought this one. Can't take to it at all. Waste of money for me.
Arai Tour Cross. Best lid yet? Just arrived this week. I'll let you know.

More money than brains? Not really, I don't smoke any more. (26 months = approx 760 days at £5 a day = loads of new shiny kit instead! Think about it if you are a smoker)

Well I've had a week of using the Shoei XR1000, and IMO it blows the System 5 'completely' out of the water. It's lighter, it's quieter (even with all the vents open compared to the 5 with them all closed ), the rain runs off the visor at a lower speed (dont know why, but on the 5 drops/rain seem to smear and stick to the visor), the visor is a doddle to remove (unlike the 'destroy the lid' effort on the 5), it's MUCH more comfy, it's more stable on my head, it's cheaper, seems to be made to a much higher build/quality, comes with the pinlock included, and doesnt mist even with all the vents closed. In the 5's defence it kept my chin warm

Yeah I'd be interested to know too.

I've owned an Arai Quantum F for the last 5 years and while it is incredibly comfy and great most of the time, when it rains boy does it mist up quick. Being a specs wearer, its a complete pain in the bristols as opening the visor doesn't help (obviously)

You know the answer to this already, everytime I bugger off into the distance cause you can't see shit out your visor as it's misted again.

Can't say I find it heavy as mentioned by another poster, but it's certainly not as light as my Shoei's ( and I feel another one coming on ) Also find the venting system on the C2 excellent even during 140 miles of snow/rain/wind through the lakes and up the M74 on a naked SV last week. Heard only good things about the Pinlock on the Shoei, and had very good experience with the Foggy neoprone thingy on my Shoei's

I have recently bought a Schuberth C2 and was under the impression that the visor wouldn't mist! Well the first trip in heavy rain resulted in having to open visor to see anything!

Anyway after checking my visor the inner coating was coming off. I have now just received a new replacement visor under warranty haven't tried it in the rain yet.

But for such an expensive helmet Im dissappointed about the anti mist.

Does anyone know if there is a double glazed visor available for the C2 or even a pinlock?

Anyway, tried on a Caberg Trip yesterday as I liked the look of them but found the shape very weird and didn't sit right at all

So a wee trip to local BM dealer and saw their version of the Arai Tour-X. Not sure what its called but basically its a full face enduro type shaped lid with a peak. Tried it on and felt ok. Retailing for around the £240 mark.

Anyone out there got one for a bit of feedback in relation to fit and finish, misting, quietness etc?

Shoei Multitec, the new flip up that replaces the syncrotec II. It feels great on and seems to have had all the so called cproblems of the syncrotecII sorted!!! The pin lock is absolutely awsome, why don't all manufacturer's use them???????

I have put up with a caberg justissmo for 3 years and it is truly dire in cold or wet weather! I would even describe it as lethal in cold and wet as it is simply not possible to maintain good vision. The Trip is just a cheaper version of the same with plastic chin guard latch components instead of metal and a more trendy design.

On the recommendation of a number of people but especially Dutchman who rides in all weathers all year round (including mainland Europe in the snow) I have just bought a System 5 and the double glazed visor. This is not a proper double glazed moulding but a pin-lock item. Not cheap but it does work. I rode about 40 miles last night mostly at high speed in torrential rain across the moors from Largs to Glasgow. The visor remained dry and mist free, even during the slow bits through town at traffic lights etc. Compared with the Caberg it has great ventilation. I had the chin vent open and the forehead and back vents closed but could still feel a good flow of air coming into the helmet and (in stark contrast to the Justissimo) no water came in through the vent to spray over the inside of the visor.

The visor costs £60+ but if it allows you to stay with your existing helmet may be a cheaper option.

It may be relevent as well that I'm 1.8m tall and on an 1150GS wth a Tobinated standard screen, set high and quite steeply raked.

Just bought a Shoei Raid 2. Best helmet I've had by a mile. High quality build and totally fog free. It's very comfy at speed too - saved me buying tobinators!

Hi Packer, fair enough, but.. It's not just the misting problem.

Having the use of both helmets, XR and Sys 5, I'd put the XR on in the winter/night/rain every time. The XR is just so much quieter (as you'd expect from a non flip face), it's lighter, more aerodynamic (less turbulance), the terrible tear it off (or wreck it) visor release system on the 5 means that every time you take the visor off to clean it you wear the plastic lugs until the visor refuse to stay up when moving (needed for when it was misting, but perhaps not as much of an issue with the double glazed visor), the XR release sytem is a joy to use and should be standard on every helmet imo, the seat belt type fastener of the 5 needs adjusting if you want to wear a neck warmer (an issue with all helmets like this), the curvature of the 5 visor seems to resist shedding rain as well as the XR visor and caused me problems with headlight glare at night. Even in the dry you might notice a strange patch of reduced optical vision at night in the middle of the 5 visor, I did as did others which made me wary at night, oh and my Sys 5 let in rain like a sieve after a few months making misting even worse and part of the check pads ripped after 10 months (replaced no hassle by my dealer). It's a decent enough summer helmet but has certain design faults that would prevent me from recommending it for four season or night use. This is of course just my opinion of the helmet and may not ring true for yourself or anyone else. hth

I'm sure you'll find the S5 with the double glazed visor pretty good m8, I just couldnt find it in myself to pay more money for something that might not work. The XR comes with a pinlock as standard, as should all helmets imo. Pick up the thread in a bit and let us know what you think. Oh and give us a wave if you see me near Glasgow, Silver/grey 12, Silver helmet

Guys I also have a BMW System V - seems ok so far, I've ridden down to about 40F and while moving it's fine, and I flip the visor open a crack at stops. As winter approaches here in the USA we'll see.....

Question I have is: What exactly is the Sys V double visor ? My Sys V came with the clear and an optional dark visor. Are there other visor options available ?
