Ignition ...each time it's turned on a loud series of squeaks emit from the undercarriage of the bike. I took it to dealer in Bologna and he suggested it was the exhaust flap and applied some wd 40 to the pulley system that opens the exhaust flap. Engine cold and the dealer turns on ignition and no squeaks. off I go happy--ish. Already I have had a new engine in this bike. Anyway, I reach Ancona for the ferry to Patras in Greece and hey presto we have the squeaks again. I decided to phone the BMW helpline assist number in ireland where the bike was bought and originated. BMW assistant said they could not help unless the bike was broken down or unrideable. What a shower of twits...

I found a dealer in Patras.... EXTREMELY helpful. Took him 30 seconds to diagnose the problem as he has seen it before. Problem is he has no part and its 4 pm Saturday afternoon and he is closed. YES I called from the ferry and he WAITED so he could look at my biker. BA ANDROPOLIOUS PATRAS.... great dealer.

He advised that it needs seeing to and best I should go to Athens and get it seen to Monday. He also advised if no warranty ther cost is close to 2000 EURO to fix. YES two thousand. Only problem about Athens Monday is we have ferries booked to leave the mainland Sunday. But hey ho s**t happens. Then he went on to explain the process and then I became mega concerned. Having diagnosed the problem I thought he will email BMW Motorrad dealer in Athens and I go there Monday and all is sweet. NO.... think again.

He advise me that i must go to Athens, have the Athens dealer diagnose the problem, have them contact Germany to get permission to complete a warranty repair and then they will order the part and do the work. How long is this going to take ? Isnt it supposed to be an adventure touring bike. By the time all this gets done our holiday will be over.

Anyway, anyone out there with ideas on how I can get the process moving faster? What can I expect in way of compensation, transport, hotels etc from BMW ?

Apart from royally fucking up our trip there seems little in the way of process from BMW to actually EXPEDITE problems for folks " on the road touring".

Hope it hasn't been to much of a whinge but it is really annoying to have had so many problems with what is truly an amazing bike to ride.

Be well, ride safe

Cant you just disconnect the flappy valve cables, Lock it in the open position an carry on?

Bloody hell it's a squeak! Either just ride it or, as above, open up the flappy valve and disconnect it. This not something that requires international rescue!

Thanks for the suggestion and whilst that's a short term fix I really want the problem solved in a complete way. Also, what happens if BMW decide I have voided their warranty... but thanks for responding and be well...Ed

Fuck me. Bodge it up. Carry on with your trip an sort properly once home.

This is the only part of the 'Adventure' you can't buy.

It's squeak ! It's not causing you unnecessary issues unless you let it, and I cannot see how this is fucking up your trip tbh, just let it squeak and enjoy your trip, I had water leak out my engine for 7 out of 10 days, I could have called international rescue and spent my holiday being pissed off, instead i used my loaf and just topped it up everyday.

first thing i did when i bought the bike is disconnected the cables to keep the valve open

Don't worry edwgorden, it will run just fine without the flap, when I had one I took it off, if yours is squeaking it at least means that it is still moving. Just leave it and carry on with your trip and get it sorted out when you get home. Squeaking will not break the bike and if it does break, for some other reason, well at least you will have BMW assist to get you home.

Splash out a bit more and buy some Akra headers.....oh yeah

I smiled & reflected upon a recent situation with my partners son. He'd had a minor prang (not his fault) which dislodged the bumper on his Peugeot 106. Instead of putting it in the boot & driving home he'd immediately abandoned the car as undriveable miles from home.

He thought i was completely reckless in putting it back on and after securing with a mix of cable ties & ratchet straps making him drive it home. He was literally crapping himself that he'd be stopped by the police.

There's a generation of peope who just have no idea how stuff works.

I blame Esther Rantzen.

2000 Euro's to repair a squeak? That can't be right. Buy a can of WD40 and do it yourself.

Buy some tools if your not carrying any and remove it free it off lube it up and refit a 10 minute job or just ignore it On the last trip we did we had the charging system on a blackbird spread all over the floor adds to the fun its the unpredictable things that make bike touring fun

Hi Ed, You will get nowhere with the warranty replacement, if there are no fault codes the dealer will have to justify why something that's working should be changed, they are passing you around,, if you were to cough up th money it would be done quickly,
If they really wanted to attack the squeak , slipping the silencer off and spraying the inside of valve may work,
Your focus on the squeak is wasting your holiday and God forbid anyone who is travelling with you,
Take the advice allready given and get on with the adventure,,,,,,,,

If it is the exhaust flap sticking (and it certainly sounds like it is), lubing it with WD40 will only last so long until the heat of the exhaust burns it off, you need something like nickelslip or coppaslip in there to survive the heat.
Take the cables off the drive servo and make sure the flap is open (it should spring open but if it is suffering lack of lubrication it may not do this without external force)
The flap serves only to reduce noise, BMW supplied and fitted aftermarket headers do not use it so there is no problem removing it or disabling it in situ.

Removing the flap ( I have) does actually generate a fault code at service time but the fault can not be cleared as there is no valve flap for the diagnostic to find

Not that anyone should be concerned about this fault as the bike is better for it IMO

Even if it seizes shut you can still ride the bike with not a huge drop off in performance.....as it turns out I had been for god knows how long
