There's a growing group of people building up a map of the UK as well as the rest of the world. As there's a lot of people here that use GPS's, just by uploading your GPS tracks to the database will help speed up the creation of this map. This doesn't just include metal roads but other stuff such as byways, footpaths etc. Information as well as the place to upload your tracks can be found at http://www.openstreetmap.org/ If you're feeling even more helpful you can convert your tracks using the provided software and add them directly to the map. Check out this map of Oxford for an example of what you'd be contributing too:

Had a bit of a play with this today.

Whilst grabbing the data from my GPS is quite easy, following then what has to be done with it is a bit tricky. Finally I realised that you needed a different login to the one I'd already created and bingo, data uploaded.

I then tried to edit it. Because you're working on a live database the fear is that you'll wreck others work. Add to that the fact that all 3 of the editors are incomprehensible and you really begin to twitch.

I think all I managed to do was to name my road, and put a link road between the A27 and the Old Shoreham Road. Even that didn't seem to join at the ends!

Don't blame me when you're lost in Brighton. :eek

Which editor did you use? I used Josm and watched the little video tutorial the bloke had done. Make sure you get the nightly snapshot 'cause the latest stable release looks to be buggered.

If you were using the stable version of Josm as mentioned above this might be why. Even if you aren't comfortable adding the roads, just uploading the GPS track if helpful and someone else can do the rest.
