Just been to start bike after two weeks and it won't. Just a rhythmic clicking which I'm taking to be the solenoid. Indicators, lights etc seem fine, but can anyone confirm that this is just a flat battery issue and nothing more serious?

It's been on an Oxford Optimiser trickle charger, so I'm well hacked off that it won't start! Put it on a normal charger direct to battery terminals, hope this will sort it out. Also has alarm on it which probably hasn't helped, but I woudl expect it to last for more than a couple of weeks without problem.

Is this something that happens with 1200 GS's, or is ther elikely to be a fault with my bike.

Any comments gratefully received!

Robin.

Had that problem once with a previous bike (Gixer) and turned out that I hadn't connected the Optimate correctly and it discharged instead. Reconnected, left it for a day and all was well. Nevertheless, there have been reports I believe of some people having this problem using the BWM battery charger. Might be worth doing a search. Good luck with it anyhow.

It'd seem that your bike is suffering from the same problem that mine has just been recalled for. there is a new software patch that is being installed by the dealers at the moment that is suposed to stop the brain thinking you've got a flat battery. call bmw assist and they'll take it in for you and update it.
just been in this morning to have mine done.

Thanks

...for responses. Wasn't a case of brain thinking battery was dead, I don't think.

Put it in a normal battery charger for 45 mins and all was fine. I do wonder whether the Optimiser doesn't necesarily "match" with the brain via the power socket, and so ends up draining rather than charging. Putting it directly onto the battery terminals makes the "battery condition" lights light up differently to using the socket.

Will keep an eye on it (assuming I don't suffer similar problems again) and get the dealers to check it when it's in for it's nect service, which isn't too far away.

Robin.

You can't charge via the power socket with anything other than a BMW charger, so this is your problem. Always use the Optimiser direct onto the battery terminals and you'll be ok :)
