GS adv 2002 24000miles FBMWSH, booked in for 24k service on Tuesday...got up this moring to go out, started up and left running for approx 3 mins................came back out and serious smoke/vapour comming out from the oil cooler beneath headlamps..........temperature showed 2 bars on display....no other warnings, turned off immediately and am now sat worrying!!
Although I am the second owner, I have owned it for a month and covered 600 miles and being my third GS it seemed fine up until this morning...ps still under warranty

Any ideas??
:(

It may just be caused by condensation. Are there any obvious signs of oil leaks? I get similar things happening to mine if I wash the bike down and then put it straight in the garage.

If theres no sign of an oil leak then I wouldn't worry....unless it's the wiring loom going up in smoke or plastic starting to burn or ....:eyebrow

....excuse my ignorance of all things mechanical....yes I did wash it on thursday and put it away thought it was dryish!! no obvious oil leaks oil level good, dare I start it again!!

Feel daft for panniking but better safe than sure I think and know there are better qualified people out there to advise

Cheers feel tons better :D

When washing it, water gets into the finns on the oil cooler. What you had was lots of steam. Best way to dry the oil cooler is to take it for a run - get to about 50 and you get water on your visor even on a dry day.

Get going and ride it, and by the way if you read the owners book it is recommended not to start the bike and leave it running to warm up. But instead start and ride...

One possible side reason being this way you won't see the steam... HA HA HA

Monty - you are a complete t o s s e r!!!
Just shows how often you wash dunnit! :D

......your comments are very interesting "get out and ride it"-on average do about 40,000miles/year on bikes about 30% on a GS, yes I am known to clean a bike now and again!!!!.. that said theres two GS owners out there that are greatful of the way I look after my kit...
............but Jim you could have something there with that " Tosser Theory".......:D :D
