Well today I have some good news... and some bad
My cam chain guide arrived yesterday along with some other stuff (head gasket etc) from
Motorworks so I decided to get on with the job. First of all I had to decide where to cut the guide, after a bit of thought I got the Dremell out with a cutting disc attached, unfortunately once I had cut it, I tried it for fit, it slipped on with a firm push. At that point I remembered I hand't taken a photo

so here is where I cut and the angles etc..
Now fitted..
Barrel on, remembering to pull the chain through, you may notice the cleaned off piston.. I couldn't resist a bit of scratching with a screwdriver whilst on the phone
Then time to put in some new blood..
Now for a little tip.. I was talking with Vern and he mentioned about taking out the slack in the chain before attaching the cam sprocket, now my first thought was to make it taught on the upper side (opposite side from the tensioner), the bit that the sprocket mounts on can be rotated slightly on either direction, enough for the same affect as being a tooth out. Anyway I fitted it, then put everything back together and started the engine.. just. Bollocks.. I had taken out the slack on the wrong side of the chain! Set the bike back up to TDC, off with the downpipes as I can't get the tensioner out with them in situ, take the cam sprocket off then take the slack out of the tensioner side, on with the sprocket, down pies and everything else then try again.
This time he started straight away.. Whahoooo :beer jug:
The bad news????
The bloody tap tap is still there

I am now thinking that it's the cam / buckets. Back in the garage tomorrow. Talking to Vern this evening, he's had two cams go and between us we think it could be that.
On a positive note, the cam chain guide had to be replaced so it was still a job worth doing.
I hope all of the above reads ok, I know what I mean and hope I've got it written down ok
