Help.. metalic knock / tap on right side

When you had it apart were cleaning the piston crown did you check the rings and glooves in case they've stretched? (the grooves)....also that there was no small end play?

Trouble is that listening to your vid again it does sound like top end, there's no marks and everything is correct in the rocker cover?

The tensioners are definately ok?

We're with you on this:comfort:D

I did check the rings/grooves, all seamed nice and tight, without sticking. The little ends I didn't check:blast I even thought about it as I was torquing the head down! Luckily Motor Works sent Two head gaskets (and charged them to me) so I can pull the head off again if needed. Whats the likelihood of little ends failing at 57K miles? The tappets and end float gaps were fine.

It does sound Top end, hence it's driving me nuts! I'm meeting up with Vern at lunchtime, well 2 ish, and taking my cam assembly (Quatt cafe if anybody wants a coffee on me :beer jug:) ) so he can have a look too, I am thinking pushrods at the moment as it is quite a metallic knock (as can be heard in the video).

The tensioner I took apart and even put a new spring in.

A little bird tells me it's the cam carrier:clap

The suspense got to you then, couldn't wait for the next instalment :augie:D

I found out why I couldn't find the problem, I was using proper tools where as Vern used cutlery from the cafe :D

Anyway as said, it looks like it is play (about 1/2 mm) in the cam carrier as can just about be seen here, we think it could be because of the broken cam chain guide it may have helped the chain 'throw' and put more wear on the cam?

So back in the garage tonight for another play :thumb

Must just say at this point Many Thanks to Vern for his help, I take back everything I ever said about you, (as long as this cures my problem) :D

Stop fecking about on a pooter and get and put it back together.

Me and steptoe have got a book going on when it goes bang:D

Ok ok, so I went back in the garage and continued taking things apart, as you can just see the cam holder is just starting to get a burr on it..

this is the end of the camshaft, nicely worn..

then I dropped the buckets out, looking at the top of them they almost look like new, the same with the cam lobes, but when I fetched them out and put them on the bench I thought I could see an optical illusion, as if they looked like beer barrels..

but no.. they really are fecked:blast

so now I think I shall replace the lot, the only parts that don't look too bad are the rocker arms and shafts, should I use them or just replace them anyway, they must have taken a whack to deform the buckets! what do you reckon? expensive day shopping I think :tears

Bloody hell - that's quite some wear! You've certainly found the source of the knock :eek

It looks as though it's been oil starved at some point - are the oilways into the head clear?

As you say, there's probably not much worth salvaging. I'd guess new parts won't be cheap - it might be worth looking for a good second hand head or cam carrier assembly (although it might be hard to find one for sale without the rest of the head).

The oil ways are clear and everything was moving very smoothly. I've owned the bike for 5 years but can't say what may of happened with the last owner! I remember he was paranoid about which oil to use... but then that's normal on here :D

I will look for a sh head etc, but really it needs to be low milage one for my own piece of mind :blast Suppose I'd better get on the phone and get some prices in. (we need a scared smiley)

Someone will be along shortly to say it must've been left ticking over on the side stand, thereby starving the RH top end of oil:augie

How much ?!?
Cheers for that :thumb

hows the other side ? bit odd there's that much wear on one side only :nenau
I haven't looked at the other side yet, it is nice a quiet though :augie

Have you left it ticking over on the side stand for a long time ?

:pullface

HA ha....:thumb

Update... Clarks BVM phoned today to say my parts were in, I went straight over, then got in the garage as fast as possible, overalls on, opened boxes and bags.... W*nk*y Bo**ocks, they only sent 1 pushrod and 1 bucket along with the camshaft and cam holder, fecking useless..

Another week to wait
