Hi, can any one help I am seriously considering swapping my 1200GS for a 1200RT. I am approaching the old fart attitude and want someone warmer, IE big fairing HEATED SEATS and comfort. I have had a test ride and loved the RT then rode the GS home and smiled at the 1st roundabout. I can,t afford both so what do I do?

I was thinking of doing the same and haven't tested an RT yet.

I suspect the RT is the sensible cooler weather/motorway type bike yet the GS is more for warmer weather/A or B road type stuff.

Much more weather protection on the RT but the GS isn't bad with the textiles available these days.

Let us know what you decide to do. Have you considered the new GT yet?

Get a pair of Steptoe muffs, a Steptoe Shitebag and some wally flaps.....then add a Nippy Norm barn door screen and you'll have a GS with as much weather protection as an RT :thumb

Thanks for the quick reply, Don't you guys have anything better to do?.
No I have not cosidered the K bike, I have allways had the boxer and seem stuck with that format. Don't really fancy a shite bag and muffs as I have my image to consider.

Well if you have an image to consider it is plain that you shouldn't go for an RT, you will just blend into the background, RT is a good bike but it is boring and reliable  :thumb

advise line

keep the r1200gs for the, soon to arrive fine weather (dont need heated seat in the summer) then change in september. You then have around 7 months to look forward to getting a new bike. :thumb nick

I wanted to swap my 1200 for a HP2, but after hearing my dealers
best p/ex offer the HP2 kinda lost it's appeal

I know two individuals who made the same swap (1200GS to 1200RT), only to realize months later what an utterly boring and souless bike the 1200RT really is. Both of them are now riding 1200GS's again. :nenau

Through issues with my bike I have had both the RT & GS for 2 days each, and although the RT was nice it seems to be missing something, the GS has it though :D
Personally I'd still have the 1150, but the 1200GS is still more fun than the RT IMHO and guess if you are looking at major miles touring two up then the RT will win.
But it's your choice.... :thumb

Thanks again for your replies and the link,
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
There is a £4500 differnece to swap which comes into the equation, but I have just read this weeks MCN 25000 miles miles on the loan RT which is very favourable. :nenau

If the 'old fart' comment is synonymous with age, then I suggest that the major consideration should be weight.
However good the RT may be, its weight would put me off. I couldn't wait (sorry) to change from an 1150 to the 1200 GS, primarily because of the mass advantage.
No, buy something lighter - you do not need a hernia I am sure.

The RT is the same weight pretty much as a standard 1150GS but seems to carry its weight lower. So, yes, it is heavier to move around than the 1200 but not much.

Having just looked at the statistics for the RT, I can't rationalize the BMW figures:
229 kg Dry
259 kg Wet
My best guess at the weights of fuel and oil only come out at about 22kg, so where does the other 8 come from? Heavy brake fluid (no pun intended)?
Either way a fully fuelled RT is a considerable mass to move around.
Stick with the GS. ;)

Stay with the GS, son.

I had a RT1100 about 6 years ago but I'm getting better now. Ploddy, heavy, "noisy" behind windscreen, but comfort supreme. But duullllll.

Then I discovered the R1100R about 5 years ago. Revelation ! Light, powerful, manoevreable, fun.

Then I discovered the GS1150 about 4 years ago. Yet more fun - not as slippery as an R1100R, or as easy to get on/get off ........ but even more fun. I can't bring myself to do anything other than enjoy the thing and EVERY other bike tried has been a disappointment.

If you go to a R1100RT, R1150RT or R1200RT you'll be fine but deep down "unsatisfied". Like a curry with no spice.

Ah well. Addiction.

Had a 12RT in December, done around 2,600m in comfort, sometimes ride with a few Quick, nimble 12GSers, no problems  I liked my old 12GS, and after the GSA it felt like a Toy :thumb but I find if I leave off the 4stone weight of panniers and top box the 12RT does everything the 12GS did and gives around 54mpg as opposed to 45 on the GS, got a warm bm, the leccy screen is a boon in wetish conditions (spray and oncomong trucks), yeah I'm pleased with it. May get bored one day and swap for a 12GSA, see what they are like first. :beerjug: Go with your heart, it's your Ride. :bow
