Help needed - Broken down

Top tips and thanks again for chipping in. Not my proudest moment and sounding as though a Honda C90 would be a safer form of transport for me till i can master the knack of sight glass! Simple stuff I appreciate.

Just wondering if anyone knows what a healthy rate of engine oil consumption is for a 'run in' 1150 gs/gsa. This one's an 05 gsa getting on for 60,000 miles. Know riding conditions, riding style and other factors come into play and it's not a clear cut answer but based on others experience could be useful to know.

Part II of Help needed - Broken down to follow...

I think BMW quote a rate of up to 800 ml per 1000 kms as acceptable
However that usage would concern me
Who has serviced the bike, over the last 60,000 miles

Okay this may raise a follicle of disbelief .... But Here goes

If my GS has at least a 1/3 oil showing in the sight glass, I don;t top up the oil... (I work on just between a 1/3 and half on mine )

I don't top it up unless it goes down to below a 1/4

Its a theory a mate of mine and I have that the boxers will find a level that they stop burning oil at

so far 2,500miles its been sitting at around a third full and not changed much level wise

Interesting stuff. Johnny B- servicing has been done by BMW and latterly independent BMW mechanics on the whole. Always used castrol actevo 4t 20w-50 and I'd say it been consuming less oil than that. Well have to wait till the spares arrive with the mechanic thursday. The plot thickens.

Hmmm, I wonder if you can get a deeper sight glass then;)

Just to say thanks for everyone's help. I managed to get back to Calais a few days ago riding with 3 sparks working and a new starter motor fitted. The oil level issue would appear to be a one off mystery and the mechanic was confident, as I am from riding back, of no long term engine damage. So far sounding much better. As for the engine compression readings some further investigation needed there along with I'm told an electronics reset and new wire from the broken side spark to the alternator. Thanks again! :D:D
