Hi,

Since 2 months, I own a BMW R1200GS LC from 2013. It has 64K kilometers.

After I bought it, I felt a strange vibration. It first seemed that it were the tires. I just installed new tires at the BMW dealer, and the problem was still there. I also found a way how to replicate the issue.

When I drive in 6th gear 100km/h (60mph) and pull in the clutch and let it run free, there is a strange sound appearing after a few seconds. This is very loud and concering.
I went to the BMW dealer, and there they also acknowledged that it was a very weird sound. They never heard something similar and recommend me to replace the complete engine block.

For me it seems that it is the gearbox. More specific the bearings. But to be honest, I have no clue and am just doing research online.

Can someone help me? Did you encounter this problem before?

I have a video posted here (6th gear):

Thanks in advance!

Does it only happen in that gear & at that speed?

Thanks for the quick responses!

Is that the noise you hear when riding, or only like that
It is similar to this, since I have lots of motor sound + road noises I can not 100% verify.

It happens in gear 4-5-6 and mostly around the 50 mph. However, when lightly accelerating I hear a similar rattle.

And at idle, revving the motor there is no vibration or whine?

Has the final drive been inspected?

Given it happens off power, and continues with the rotation of the drivetrain. It's something from the engine back> gear box, cardan shaft, final drive unit. I'd be starting at the final drive unit. Check for any bearing play, and give the oil a change to see the colouration and if there's any debris.

The dealer mechanics do not expect it to be from the final drive. The sound is also clearly coming from the fron near the transmission. Did the bearing play check as well. Feels solid. The cardan is replaced 4k ago.

It not the driveshaft, I removed the engine and am now waiting on a special tool to remove the transmission. Hopefully I recognise an issue.

If not, probably will mount a new transmission anyway.

I noticed you had a similar threat in 2023. How did this end for you?

there was no noise to my vibration, and it disappeared once i had a new shaft fitted - courtesy of the updated service schedule from BMW.
