Your help would be gratefully appreciated with a slight problem I'm having with my 2012 Rallye. Since I've had the bike the riders seat has been a bitch to remove, its been back to North Oxford garage twice now once on the 6000 mile service and again today. Basically to remove the seat you have to hit (bloody hard) the rear of the seat down and backwards to get it to come loose, once its free its ok for the rest of the day but afterwards its back to hitting the hell out of it.

Adam one of the service guys at NOG agrees its not right that you should hit it so hard to get it free , but the Techie guy was arrogant about it and basically said there all like that and yours is a good one. So have any of you had trouble getting the seat loose.

I have no problems at all - gentle press and it just pops out! Sometimes a pin to get back on - particularly lining up the front bits but never getting it off. Think NOG might be bullshitting you?

Do you have problems when refitting the seat ?

They all do that, is a comment that springs to mind. I've had 3 twin cams, and they were all the same.:blast

I'll get you half way there but you have to do the rest.

It comes from HERE which is extremely useful and you may want to bookmark it :thumb

Have a look at the diagram, maybe even print it out, then cautiously approach your bike with a 1/4 inch drive socket set, a can of lube and a set of allan keys, maybe a small technical impact adjuster too.

Have a poke around, see what you can loosen gently, and see what moves a little once it's loosened.

Try the seat on again....is it better? Worse? the same?

Depending on the results, adjust or loosen other things, see what's causing the blockage and maybe even give things a small knock with the hammer....

TIP.....if you wipe copper grease on bars, lips of edges and so on, you stand a good chance of seeing 'witness marks' where a bar doesn't quite slot into a holder, a lip doesn't quite clear an edge or something.

Sorry if this all seems overly patronising, it was only meant to be a LITTLE patronising, but really, go have a look, have a play with it and you should be able to fix it yourself......far more satisfying than getting someone else to fix it, and far cheaper too :thumb

PS don't forget to tighten everything up again :augie

Keep repeating to yourself......"It's not rocket science, it's not rocket science" :)

Thanks Fanum. :thumb

It might not be rocket science but put tools in my hands and its going to go wrong. Put me in a Bakery and i can make just about anything, but don't ask me to fix anything.

Apart from that any tools i do have are now residing at my ex Mrs place. If and when i can get them i will use your Guide.

Demonbaker, you're just down the road from me, I have a garage, a few tools and an '08 GSA with standard and Kahedo seats. You're welcome to bring it to my gaff and we can have a look at things. The GS911 won't be of any use though - it won't talk to your seat. Bring one of your lardy cake's........

There we go :thumb

Mr Satanic Baker.....take Beemerman up on his offer.....you'll meet a fellow GSer which is always good, learn a good bit and come out of it more confident in 'doing stuff' :thumb

Anyone who has the nous to make good bread isn't dumb......I reckon all you need is a little confidence, someone to hold your hand over the first few steps and you'll be on your way :clap

Little steps, great feeling :thumb2

Both my 1200 seats were fine to fit and remove providing the toolkit and accessories beneath were not sitting proud. I often have to mess about with stuff stowed under the seat on my current GSA to get it to fit and remove properly.

Under seat storage on these bikes could be a lot better by design.

On my 05 GS it required a few hard thumps and a good pull to get it off but on the 12 GSA it slips off with a gentle push of the fingers. Slotting it back on is difficult on both and I often have to hammer away at it for several minutes before its in the right place.

My seats (low and normal) are easy as to remove and put back on. OP shouldn't have to dig around with tools adjusting a mundane, integral item. Same old story, yes OP could get it fixed himself, but why spend shed loads at a dealer to fix - thats why some of us buy BMW. So the dealer can dig around with their tools...

Turn key whilst simultaneously smacking the centre rear of the riders seat with the side of a balled fist and it will pop the seat. Does not need to be very hard and it will come off.

2006 1200gsa turn the key no undue pressure and up pops the seat, once back in place light pressure with heel of the hand and locked back on. They are certainly not "All like that Sir" tell him to feck off :comfort

I'll second that. The key to an easy release of the seat is the stuff packed underneath it.

Reminds me of one of Spike Milligan's books with the instructions

"Open crate with crowbar contained within"

That is the problem usually unless you have some stuff under the seat that binds on the seat bottom putting pressure on the hook. You will notice that the key is hard to turn in that instance. On R1200GS.info there is a tip to make a loop of wire and wrap it around the hooks. You should be able to reach the loop when the passenger seat is removed. Good post Edventure.

Question: Who is the tech at NOG that told you it is normal? I would like to know to pass the complaint on to the man in charge.
