Hi all,

Got a Garmin Quest, loaded MapSource on to my computer planned a route out for today but could not download it to my Garmin from my PC. Been through the manuals. When I try and look for “The device” my PC cannot find it? :spitfire

Switched the Garmin off and back on with USB connected, re booted the PC with Garmin on etc etc, still no joy. Please can somebody out there in “GS Land” help!!!!!!

Long story short, what have I missed? If anything! :nenau

Cheers,

have you checked the USB skt. you are using actually works with another USB peripheral?

try one on the back of the pc. bit of a long shot, but sometimes they are not all connected.

otherwise, sorry, no idea :(

Yup - what the mans says. Your PC is probably trying to use the USB port that you have already used for another USB item (Camera, MP3 player or similar) Delete all other items from your PC and try again. Should work because then it will only find your GPS.

Make sure you are running the latest MapSource. Whatever Garmin says, there were issues with MapSource & Windows Service Pack 2.

Just check that you are using the Garmin USB cable supplied with the GPS. Although it has a standard socket identical to some seen on Digital Cameras, I can tell you that any other than the genuine Garmin cable does not work. The computer does not "see" the Quest. Don't ask why I know!!!

Try updating the USB drivers as well

They are on the Garmin website. Don't run the Windows new hardware wizard, it won't work.

Hi all sorry its me again!

Can anybody post a link to the Garmin web site so I can load the latest USB driver for mapsource, re my Quest.

Click on Mapsource help and say's "no drivers found" loaded, unloaded system still no joy. :nenau

Here are the Garmin USB drivers. Unzip this archive to your hard disk. With the Garmin Quest plugged in and switched on go to Control Panel, System. In system click the tab "Hardware" then click "Device Manager". Look for an unknown device or a device with a yellow exclamation Mark in the Icon. If this device disappears shortly (5 seconds) after you unplug the Garmin then plug the Garmin back in and highlight the unknown device with your mouse. Then righthand click the device, when the menu pops up left hand click on "uninstall". Once the computer has stopped whirring. Unplug your Garmin, shut down and restart the computer, log in allow the computer to complete its start up before doing anything.

Now plug the Garmin back in. Switch it on if is not. You should see a pop up window "New Hardware Found", it should correctly identify the new hardware as a Garmin Quest. In a few moments another window should appear asking you to install the relevant software. When prompted click on automatic installation. Do not have any CD in your CD drive at this point, After a moment another pop should appear asking you whether you want to specify a location to search for the software. In the box you can either specify the folder into which you unzipped these files, or browse to it. When you have specified the correct folder, click OK then when you have been returned to the New Hardware wizard click next, the system should now show copying briefly and should install the correct driver. If necessary click Finish. If you now look in System, Hardware, Device Manager there should be an entry "Garmin Devices" and if you expend the item by clicking once on the "+" sign to the left of the entry you should see " Garmin USB GPS".

If this is visible then the drivers will have been installed correctly.

If you have any further questions please PM me and I will be glad to help.

Oops

I screwed up there, there aren't any updated drivers for the Quest that I can see, and you should run the hardware wizard, but only after installing MapSource.

I should know better than to do stuff from memory, supporting users is part of my job.

Doh!

Sorry for the confusion.

yet again "Thanks to all"!

Madproffesor "I salute you" :bow

Off to do it know before Leeds Utd vs Wigan game, wish me luck :spitfire

The defect with all USB devices is that if the device is plugged in BEFORE the drivers have been installed, then often Windows just flags it as an unknown device. Thereafter even if you subsequentely install the correct drivers - Windows still "remembers" it as an unknown device. So the only thing to do is to completely uninstall the device. This sometimes in my experience calls for starting the computer in "Safe Mode", going to Device Manager and uninstalling any unknown devices and sometimes there are several. Then restarting the computer and then trying again. At work when we were installing some Voice over IP handsets we had to do this process several times before we got Windows to correctly acknowledge the handset.

I have even had to delete the device_name.inf file from the PC before I could successfully get the item correctly recognised.
