Hi guys this is my first post,so would like to say hello

I was wondering if you guys could help out.I presently have a 1200gs with lowered suspension from the factory.I had wanted one of these bikes since 2006 but found the height really intimidating and hung back. When I tried the new lowered suspension I went for it and bought an58 model 1200gs.

However I now have carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands with the left being less than the right. the hand goes numb after 12miles,and then after that i have to stop every 5 miles.I dont want to give the bike up as their is nothing out their that gives me the buzz like the 1200 but would like to look for ulternatives like moving the throttle to the left side etc.I Dont mind spending cash for a conversion and was wondering if anyone could put me in the correct direction to who i go to, to have this sort of work carried out

any help appreciated

John thanks for that link

I have tried the grip puppies but did not help

I will buy the bar risers to see if that helps

I sometimes wear a cycle gel glove under my summer gloves, it helps a bit,

I am just waiting on my quack to get back to me for a date for the op for carpal tunnel, but was told the success rate was low if you carry on doing the same job as it is an rsi injury.

But that post was good gave some good reading

thanks for the post and any other views would be greatly appreciated

ps has anyone tried the qwi gloves from the usa

Just an idea,......... but.......... have you tried moving the position of the handlebars, moving them closer to you. Sometimes extending your arm will aggravate a RSI type injury.

Good luck, hope you find a solution

Quack seems right with that prognosis......

nick i have already moved the bars back to try and help but no joy,but thnks for the info anyway

was on this morning to nippy norman and ordered the risers,so hoping that maybe help a bit,i dont want to go down the route of changing bike, this bike is so flicky and a joy to ride, with the lowered suspension the boots are scraping of the ground,in corners---and it is great fun,so throwing money all directions to try and cure it.

so all help apppreciated

nick i am quite interested in the different end weights is their any you could recommend

I've had both carpal tunnels done but I managed OK with the GS. Biggest issue with a new bike was learning not to hold the bars tight - the bike will run straight with no hands on the bars at all. I found that the throttle rocker was really good cos it meant you could operate the throttle without even gripping the bar, just resting the palm of your hand on the rocker. risers helped too cos they stopped you leaning forward

bird thanks for the comment,i have a rocker,i found it got in the way,was ok for long stretches maybe keep it handy if i am on a long round

Motorworks do 'anti vibration bar end weights', I'm sure that there will be others too. I think it will be a case of finding a weight that works with your bike and your bars. One easy way to experiment cheaply would be to wrap lead roofing sheet around the bars to see what sort of weight gives the best vibration damping effect. Good luck anyway

If you even think you even might have carpal tunnel syndrome and you are not disposed to get it sorted; then, quite frankly, you are headed for regret big-time.

Sooner or late you are going to wake up and find that the symptoms you describe don't 'wear off' after a while and the numbness and weakness have become, like, permanent.

This is common, especially among men in the classic ukGSer age profile.

Proceed without delay, get some nerve conduction studies done and have the op done as expediently as possible.

I did, and ruddy glad I got there in time.

Total agreement here :thumb2, I did also and blooming glad I did before the damage became permanent after hesitating for so long.

Could not agree more!
I had the same issues and had carpal tunnel diagnosed in both hands with the right being more severe than the left..the operation took approx one hour!
Wierdly after having only the right hand sorted, the left no longer presented any symptoms at all.....and has been as good as gold ever since! Although now I have installed a mechanical cruise control, just to take unwanted pressure off the wrist during long trips. :thumb

WRONG. It is not an RSI, although RS can make the symptoms worse. The success rate is NOT low.

I have been watching this thread as I thought that someone may comment about the bars.

I feel that the std 1200 bars are swept back too much, meaning that either my arms are not facing forward as they would comfortably be or if I keep my arms and wrists in a comfortable position then the grips do not sit in my hands properly.

Don't know if I have xplained this properly but I have been thinking about trying some new bars, has anybody done this and if so what bars and how did it work?
