I wonder if anyone could help a limited experience mechanic with electrics on my 44000m 2004 1150gsa.yesterday,bike would not start for more than about 3 secs, loud misfire, bangs, dead.clock resets, rev counter starts flicking, lights flash on dash even with key out and buzzing clicking noises from under seat, does both these for a bit, then as I try to start again, there is a rectangular terminal just under the right hand side of the tank that started sparking and smoking, melting the wires.anhyone have any ideas please?I can obviously get the damaged parts replaced but of course need to find problem.to make matters worse it is obviously intermittent as,just out of interest, tried it this morning and it started, good as gold,no flashing lights bangs or anything.
many thanks in advance

Obvious you have a short in the region of the Batt +ve terminal. Make sure

your Seat Height Adjustment Bar is not shorting out the works. Well known

fault and has caused bike burn outs.

Sorry, just realised you have an 1150, I remarks only pertain to a 1200.

Have you ...

... been fiddling ? In my limited experience most 1100/1150 'faults' are the result of owners actions, i.e. Lifting the tank causing poor running, leaving tools loose under seat; and as has been said, poor adjustment of seat height ! If so, look back at the area you toyed with and start from there. If the cause isn't obvious, then go and speak to Steptoe at GSshop and he'll sort you out :thumb

that rectangular terminal under your RHS tank is your positive battery post arcing against the tank !Remember Tom Hanks in "Castaway"-" I have created Fire".:blast Except for him it was a good thing!

More likely to be the multi-connector to the fuel pump and fuel gauge.

Do you have one of those non-standard batteries that require bit of bent metal attached to the terminals in order to squeeze it under the tank? If so check that they are not making contact with the tank. Check that the retaining bolt at the right-rear of the tank is in place. If it's missing the tank can drop enough to short on the terminals with those after-market batteries.

Thanks all. Haven't touched it so it can't be something I've done, but it does have an oddysey battery,I'll put a bit of inner tube on it.It's going in to Neil H and he'll have a look, beyond me........
