I'm having a problem with my coccyx getting sore after about an hours riding on my standard GS seat. There's lots of debate about replacement seats etc...But, I'm off to the Tyrol next month and was contemplating an Airhawk (the cheap plastic version) as a short term cost effective way of alleviating bum pain for the long motorway stints. Has anyone experience of the cheap version?

Hi,
Yes I bought the 'cheap' front version off here, second hand last year. I also got the 'expensive' version second hand off ebay for the pillion. As far as I can see the only difference is in the quality of the materials used, I don't think mine is any less comfortable than 'hers'. They have made a huge improvement though.
I'd try a cheap one to see how you get on, if it works for you then you may want to get the expensive one later. Sorry about cheap/expensive but I can't remember which the PVC one is and which is the neoprene one.

There was another thread on this subject some years ago, I think someone highly recommended chopping out some of the foam at the back of the seat. Kind of f***s the seat if it doesn't work though:)

Padded cycling shorts work a treat and cost about £10 from sportsdirect. Obviously under your riding gear - not instead of:D

Cycling shorts seem to work okay for me. Cheaper than an Airhawk.

I suffer with back problems and found that the Sergent seat that came with my GSA caused me pain. I switched to the standard seat and the pain went away. Bryn on here has a Saddlemans seat, which I'm interested in getting one day. Its hollowed out for the coccyx. There was one for sale on here recently...

I had the reverse effect, I find my sargent seat much better than stock. It goes to show that seats are a personal choice in the quest for comfort, what works for many might not work for you (and vice-versa).

I also notice myself slouching a lot when riding more upright bikes like the GS, and try to consciously move around more often in the seat to alleviate pressure over my coccyx.

I have set my seat in the high position at the front and low position at the back.
This angle made it much more comfortable for me and didn't cost a penny.

Try setting the front of the BMW seat to the high position and leave the back as normal, hence you have a flatter seat surface but its a little further to reach the ground. Works for me.

I have the sergeant as well and it sorted the problem for me . I didn't like the Airhawk at all especially on the twisties where I felt totally disconnected from the bike , it felt like i would fall off on every corner .

I tried this when I bought my GSA as the seat was hell on earth after 50 miles, it made a massive improvement to comfort.

I use an old Corbin for long bike trips which is absolutely 1st class but with a downside in so much as it makes it harder for me to reach the floor as the seat is wider.

On both my 1150 and 1200 I altered the front mounts by putting a 6mm spacer under the brackets, it levels the seat and stops you slipping forward on the seat making it imho more comfortable

Too much air in it. Your backside should just be in contact with the seat below with the airhawk supporting say 70-80% of your weight. Just experiment with more/less air until you get it right. Drove me nuts until I cracked it. People do give you funny looks when your blowing up a fluffy cushion on your seat but that's all part of the fun of Airhawk ownership.

If you feel under the padding at the back of a standard GS seat you will feel a lump moulded into the seat pan. I found this seat better for height on my GSA than the standard GSA seat but that lump got nasty after 2 hours in the saddle.
I could not get on with the Sargent (too wide and too flat) but the Kahedo standard height is great. It feels hard at first but is all day comfy.
The Kahedo ultra low was horrible - comfy when first getting on but ape hanger bars and knees under my chin are not my thing

Airhawk R is 10 times better than the medium cruiser if you suffer coccyx problems. Several 500 mile days last year with no problems.

Does that just attach to the normal BMW seat?

The come with thin straps that remind me of bra straps :D .... they have a double hook on them, and the straps go under the seat and hook back on to the Airhawk cover :thumb
