Have ridden to Corsham nr Chippenham, and the oil light came on at tick over in one of the services, so I added 1/2 a litre of oil, but a few miles later the oil light came on at below 1500 rpm, then a few more miles and it won't go off below 2k rpm, and then began to flicker at 3k, now won't go off unless I blip throttle to above 4k. It was also randomly coming on and off as I was driving.
The engine sounds ok, maybe a little more tickety than normal, but that could just be my paranoia.
So the question is, is it likely to be the oil pressure switch playing up, or something more serious?
I'm with Swambo for a midweek break mikes from home and could do without the aggro Tbh

Does anyone know where the oil pressure switch is located, and where I can possibly source one locally?
Any help much appreciated

Fester

Thanks, I think I have seen that one, I have some basic tools with me, all I need is a replacement ops.
I'm staying in Corsham for two nights, can't find anything local to me via my phone, can someone recommend a local factor that would have the part in stock?

Your not far from Dick Lovetts BMW in Bristol ,if your oil levels ok give em a call to see if they have a ops you can collect ;)

BMW dealer in Bristol = Dick Lovett tel 01179050200 postcode BS10 7TU ;)

Thanks , just called them, waiting for a call back from service dept.
They are 33 miles from my location, but if they have the part o can get a lift there tomorrow.

There's also BVM in Stroud. Don't worry about the light flashing, it's one of those parts that goes wonky on the oil head 1150's. As long as there's oil in there you'll be ok to fix/replace the switch in your own time.

I thought BVM got closed down by the VAT man?

Although the oil pressure switch is not an uncommon failure, I'd not ride until I'd got it replaced. It would not be a good thing to find you've actually got a serviceable switch and a roached engine...

...... or a roached oil pump?

Cheers Mike, wasn't aware BVM had gone bust, though their website's still up and running. As far as the switch goes, that's the most likely thing that's failed/failing on the bike. Mine failed in Belgium a few years back and, after diagnosing the switch as the culprit, continued on my travels before fixing it once i got home. Oil pump failure? Highly unlikely given the symptoms, and i've never seen or heard of one failing. However, if you're not sure, best be on the safe side and get the switch replaced before going any further

According to the great Steptoe. If it had been anything other than an indication fault, the engine would already be wrecked.

No engine will last long without oil circulating.

If you start the engine, and oil disappears from the sight glass whilst engine running, then provided you haven't over filled it to give a false indication, then the oil pump will be pumping oil.

Now theres a sensible reply.:clap

Latest:
Dick lovett has left voice mail stating that there are two types of ops available (depending upon chassis no. But both need to be ordered :-(

Any other ideas from you guys?
The oil disappeared from the site glass within a few seconds of starting when I tried it earlier but the light remains on, and according to the others I'm traveling with I have done about 7 miles with the oil light on/off/buggering about,

Sounds like just the sensor then.........
Have you tried just cleaning the exterior terminals and area to make sure it's not just shorting?

I've done MANY miles with an oil pressure light on after fording, or even just in seriously heavy rain, after the sensor shorted........once it had dried up, it started behaving again, but in my case it was always preceded by a logical cause like that.

If the level is dropping from the sight glass when you start up, it sounds like the pump is working :nenau

Reach down under the left side cylinder and disconnect the wire to the wee round thing in the block and tuck it away somewhere

Now start bike and listen

Does it sound like Rumbling thunder???

Is it like sounding a Cement mixer on a site on a cold winters morning???

Does it sound like the Orcs and other bad guys are beating the schite out of the mountain in Mordor ????

Yes*************** Turn off engine and get it recovered!!!!

NO???? Then 95% sure its a faulty oil light

Judging by the distance you have ridden the big ends would be in schite and the camshaft lobes eroded to mere bantam egs than the X large free range versions fitted to 1150's

Now Calm Down Seriously if you had ridden the distance you have with the oil light on it'd be fucked by now !!

Phone motorworks in thw morning 01484353600 or 0845 4580077 Give them the last 7 digits of your frame number and they can post a new one out ex stock special delivery If required

The only one I have is fitted to my bike. It's not something I would bother carrying a spare for. As has been said, if it was a genuine oil pressure problem and not indication, then your engine would be spread up the road.

The oil pressure sensor is located about 2 inches above the oil sight glass. If the connector is a junior type, similar to the connectors fitted to your injectors, then it is the later type oil pressure sensor fitted post 02/2002 part no 12617620512. Otherwise it will be the pre 02/2002 version part no 11411342807.

Part no 12617620512 comes up as 931BM0100 on the GSF car parts web site. They have a outlet in Swindon. Whether the car part is compatible or not? I don't know, visually they look similar.
