Hi all,

Bike started to run very rough yesterday. 2004 1150 twin spark.

Have tried a few things today after reading up on here and would like your thoughts please :)

1) The bike starts although runs rough.

2) The bike will not start at all with the lower leads unplugged.

3) with the bike running if I unplug either of the lower plugs it stalls straight away

4) with the bike running if I unplug either of the main coils it makes no difference to the running of the bike.

5) The bike will start with both the main coils unplugged and run the same as with all four plugged in.... rough.

6) I did clean the bike the other day and "carefully" used a pressure washer to clean around engine and wheels... not hubs etc.

Have both my main coils gone or am I barking up the wrong tree? :nenau

I have watched forry's video of when his hall sensor failed and his bike would not start at all :nenau

I eagerly await your words of wisdom :thumb2

main coils, thats how mine went, it would run, but stall at tickover, it also used more fuel, you should hear the spark jump the gap as you pull the coil pack off the plug slightly :augie

Spot on with the fuel,

Noticed i'm only getting 230 to a tank and it was 280 - 290 before :(

There is no spark cracking when pulled off the plug slightly so it seems that they have both given up the ghost but as others have said you often do not notice that one has gone until both do

I'm hopefully going to confirm this by trying out my mates adventure coils before ordering new ones.

Any more suggestions what this could be or have we nailed it :)

I think that you'll have your answer when you swap in your mates coil packs.:thumb2

Just to update you all on the outcome...

It was the coil sticks :thumb2

The bike now is running sweeter than it has done for ages. From researching this problem I have learn't that with only one coil gone you would hardly notice any difference in the general running of the bike. With two gone it will be hesitant, lumpy, sluggish and slower to start with much reduced fuel economy.

Thinking back about 6 months ago my bike started to take an extra turn or two to fire up. In hindsite I think that may have been when my first coil went as it will fire on the secondary plug "twin spark" which is designed to fire just after TDC so in effect advancing the timing. But with the other coil firing as it should the engine once started ran fine.

Once I had fitted both the new coil sticks it started on the first turn and it was a different bike altogether. Tickover was vey smooth with just the swooshing of the pistons to be heard :D Throttle response was instant :thumb2 the bike also pulled like a train all through the revs.

I also noticed that my RiD started to missbehave some.... Just after filling to the brim... before new coils fitted... within 30 miles done it was showing two bars less :nenau with the new coils fitted it showed full again. put the old coils back on and fired it up and two bars missing again :nenau may be its connected somehow :nenau

So to sum up....

If your bike is starting to take longer to start it may not be the battery it may be one of your coils up the swanny. If it starts surging and generally not running as it should..... same again. If your coil pack has any sort of rust showing with a small crack along the seam then more than likely the coils again.

I would also replace the two as a matter of course. My bike has just covered 25K and this is the first non service related problem I have had. My previous 1150 I covered 30k without even a bulb going.

Long live the 1150 :bow:bow:bow

Don't really know if it mkes any difference to their longevity, But as the mood takes me, I brush my coilpacks with ACF50. 2004 1150 45000 miles ish, 2 new coils to date.

2003 1150, never treated the coils with anything, 49,000+ miles, both coils replaced once.

Also never had a bulb fail electrically but the yellow paint came off the indicator lamps so I needed to replace those. (I have the white lenses)

coils

hi have just gone through the same problem ,phoned up cw motorcycles yesterday explaned problem .anyway aprently the coils that come with bike black plastic heads are a bit hit and miss they fitted new 1s with gray plastic heads and i was told that these were the nuts they have had no problem with them (we will see in anouther 25,000 miles).as for gas went out with a mate on a full tank got back to his house 240 miles later .had a brew went 50 meters up the road ran out of gas .also my rid started to play up .so it was good to read your item as i had the same.:blast
