Help required - identify this exhaust.

That's the weird thing, I always had a Y-piece as well. I know what you mean about the standard pipe - horrible.

The other alternative is to try these guys: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-X-MTC-E...15?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2a33a7248b
Ignore the item listed, they have a contact number etc on there. Some time ago I wanted a bespoke part for a Kawasaki exhaust, they were quite happy to make it up within a couple of days. Good luck :thumb2

That's a very handy link - thanks:thumb It does seem strange that some bikes melt panniers and some don't - even with identical setups. I've had my ECU remapped so you'd think that the fueling would be spot on yet it still would appear to be running hot. Thanks again:)

I know it's a bit of a bodge, but wouldn't a jubilee clip and a piece cut from a steel food tin suffice just as well? That's basically what the Remus/Sebring extension is (it's shinier though) and would cost far less than 34 quid. Just my tuppence worth.

Yep you are probably right. The only issue is that I'm not too handy when it comes to actually making things and I'm not going to be at home until the weekend. It does look pretty simple though......

Looking at that pic - I reckon the clamp is fitted incorrectly. Surely the extension piece should be next to the pannier deflecting heat away from it - shouldn't it?!

Isn't it to prevent melting the indicator?

I think that you're right. May just be the angle of the phot though.

I've got some delrin spacers in the garage that I just used to fit my Revolution and no name Y piece. 10 and 20mm IIRC. I used the 20mm to space the silencer at the mounting bracket. I also loosened the Y piece clamps to allow the silencer to sit further inboard.

I'd be happy to throw a couple in the post if it helped.

That's very kind of you. Thanks:) Not required though as I've recently fitted a spacer to the exhaust mount in the form of rusty old nut - it's not pretty but it serves it's purpose. The exhaust clearance is much improved as a result.

I'd be extremely grateful if someone could post the dimensions of the circumference of the exhaust tip of a Remus Grand Prix end can. I'd like to order an HD jubilee clip as part of Plan B!

No worries. Let me know if the nut gets too rusty and I'll send some over. I'm only over by Bicester/Banbury area.

I'll drop you a PM - you must be very local to me:) Thanks:thumb

Alf,
If you can go home via Cambridge on Sat, then you can have the extension pipe I made up for a Remus I had a while back.
You will need to make up a bracket to hang the end of the pipe, but that shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks Mr DD that's a very kind offer. I'm still working out the logistics for the weekend but I will be in touch to confirm:) :thumb

So you're going to run Verns - I melted a load of stuff before getting a deflector made enroute up by an argentinual builder.

I reckon you just need to put some heat shield on the panier - something like. I just ended up putting some cardboard inside the panier till I got it sorted.

Someone with us wrapped the cans on his KTM Adventure in the stuff and his draped over paniers were fine.

If you have a few days I have the pipe you require as supplied by Vern for the Remus and could post it up

Thanks Monkeyboy. To be clear - I want to fit standard BMW plastic system cases, possibly with larger lids (not that lid size matters). I believe the extension pipe posted by Fanum above and possibly the pipe that you have are designed to be used with aluminum panniers - i.e. to stop stuff inside your pannier melting. The issue with the plastic panniers is a little more severe in that the exhaust melts a huge hole in the pannier along with destroying anything inside the pannier. I suppose the correct terminology for the part that I require is a heat deflector rather than an extension pipe.

If I'm wrong though - please do let me know:) Trip is planned for 2 weeks on Friday - ideally I'd like to fit the panniers and test before setting off!!! Thanks:thumb

Both serve the same purpose......it's not the EXHAUST heat that melts the pannier, it's the exhaust BLOW itself.

I had one of those deflectors a long while back.....bloody useless it was....ended up sticking an extension pipe on still to take the blowing exhaust right out at the back.

I think Timotei is right.....the Sebring thingy was mainly to stop the LH indicator from melting when you free up the 'zorst flow a bit, by deflecting the flow down a little.
Your alternative by the way is to use a lowering kit....WUDO used to do one, but it was silly money.

You can get flexible clamp on exhaust sections though.....a six inch piece should suffice......put it inline BEFORE the can itself and it may even take the exit from the can far enough back to avoid the boxes altogether.....being flexible, it also means you can bend it up, down, inwards or outwards so you could run the can horizontally UNDER the pannier (I did that for a while but after I smashed two cans off-roading, gave it up :blast)

You would need to modify or make a bracket, but honestly, that's a ten minute job with a bit of plate and a drill.

Last option.....if you still have your CAT, you can bung that back on and run a stubby (Halfords sell an ideal lump of boy racer pipe for the stubby) and then the exhaust jets DOWN before it even gets to the pannier area......From what you've said about the noise aspect though, I suspect you wouldn't like that.....it is louder than standard (obviously, as it's 'standard' minus the silencer' but still well inside limits, and the flow is a lot better than with the end can (although not as free as a Y piece with Remus and no baffle in)

Another option is to remove the baffle pipe from a standard can, sounds great and it's cheap, you just need a handy welder. Vern did one for me a while ago.

Have you thought about putting the Cat back on (opened up internally) and using a stubby...?

I did consider it but I really like the way that the bike rides with Y piece and Remus can. We'll be taking in my absolute favourite roads in the UK - just happen to be in your old neck of the woods - so I'd really like the bike to be running how I like it. I'm off to see an engineer friend on Saturday who reckons he'll be able to knock something up with ease. On top of that a very kind tosser has dropped some spacers and heat shielding off at my house for me. I'll post an update on progress. Thanks for all your help - you're a top bunch:thumb
