instructor boy seems to be good at winding people up he`s certainly got you lot going:handbag

No GS john.

One of your own forum members suggested we take a look at this site to view the amount of problems your bikes have after he did his RoSPA training with us and found out we binned our bmw's because they were, well cr=p.

what has really struck me is the manner in which you accept these faults as character. Ideally, I feel you miss the opportunity to be a very forceful voice for people who have trouble with their bikes. There are loads and loads of people out there who have problems with their bmw's which simply get ignored. The relatively short time I've lurked here has highlighted laughable faults that are at the very least annoying to life threatening.

I've also noticed the manner in which raising a fault issue just gets you barracked (thinking of that ever so 'minor' brake problem a lot of you have got).

So no, i don't like bmw's at all. I like less their ability to sell a poor product for a lot of money to hard working individuals who then have to contend with a lemon.

instructor boy
i own a older and simpler 1100g.s. which i bought two years ago and so far it has been one end of the country to t`other and no problems at all,as you use your bikes for work it would show any weakness very quickly, as most g.s.ers do not use their bikes for work this `unrealiability`is not such a problem.IMHO i would not spend £10000+ on any machine that `unreliable` allthough a significant number of my fellow g.s.ers are happy to do so and regard it as having `character`it is all a matter of opinion and if you the individual are happy with the situation then it is money well spent.
regards g.s.john.

dear instructor boy

i had a fireblade once very good bike and was faultless i also had a pan euro st1100(IMHO the best bmw they never built) like all hondas they lack soul, character call what you will my gs yes it has quirks (blade did not work until you rode it at 80% 100mph the pan euro did 30000miles in 3 years but was crap in side winds like i have said before the gs does both roles of the above bikes and like all bikes if you look after them they will work we all ride two wheels and should stick together whatever we ride if all you have is a want to wind people up then put on your fluro jacket put your headlight on and ride off in to the distance never to look back (unless doing a lifesaver) and go and play up your own end:augie

Instructor Boy, there is no doubt that some BuMW`s have a few problems but name me on manufacturer that produces the perfect machine. The difference here is that we have an open and honest forum where anything can be discussed. The huge majority of GS owners have little or no issues and remain silent. It`s too easy to read this forum and think they are all shite because people generally only post problems. In fact, you`d have to be a right w@nker to think that BuMW (or any other maker) sell completely unreliable bikes.

Most owners sort any issue out with their dealers who are on the whole, much better than the supermarkets who sell jap stuff. I don`t think anyone who has a problem is blinded by BuMW but understands things sometimes happen. I`ve just had a drive shaft U/J failure in my 30,000mile 1200GS-A and although I`m not happy about it, I`ve been dealt with very well and the bike is being fixed under warranty with no problem. Can`t ask for more than that and there is no point bitching and whinging.

It`s OK raising issues and no-one minds, but the point is you should be an owner. If you don`t own one or have a serious interest in the GS, you won`t be taken seriously and will have the p@ss extracted at the very least. There are a lot of people on this site who do not own GS`s and post decent and fair posts. You say you`ve owned them (were they GS`s??) and you think they are rubbish. That`s absolutely fine and you have a choice but please don`t come on here and rubbish the product because you`ve had a bad time. I`m sure the Honsuzyamduc site will appreciate you`re opinions.

I think Honda Varadero`s are an unreliable pile of shite but I don`t go onto their forum just to piss people off!!!

Have a good day:thumb

Hey there Barfly, what colour did ya get, will have to keep an eye out for ya :thumb

Black and Silver. It's come with a personalised number plate (which I happen, philosophically, to feel rather uncomfortable about, but each to their own). I have absolutely no idea how one goes about selling the registration as I've never looked into buying a personalised plate. Still, I'm told I could get a few hundred for it so it may be worth while! I might even put in the 'For Sale section' as it's 1200 specific.

I am not 'wound up' by Instructor Boy but it just seems a bit sad to me that someone would spend their time contributing to a site about bikes they don't like. Enjoy life and let us celebrate the bikes we love whilst, at the same time, feeling able to ask each other for helpful advice if a problem occurs. I use the site for an exchange of useful information and my contribution (and others) was about trying to encourage the original starter of the thread that GSs are really ok (from my experience). A brief visit to other model specific sites will certainly reveal gripes and frequently occurring issues.

Was gonna PM you for the reg as simply a nosey mare lol!
Am sure its not that difficult to change the reg over, my dad has recently done it with a couple of vehicles that he has and lets face it peeps do it all the time.
Seems to be quite a few of gsers over here now, had one of your friends round for cups of tea and a chat last nyt, also a gser :thumb
Must into double figures now, just had a count of ones we know of and made it 12

A BMW bike forum is a strange place to hang out then isn't it don't you think?

Or being an 'instructor' - does that make you that bit superior and hence you're trying to educate us? Obviously you know a lot more about GS's than us, having spend 5min on an internet forum:rolleyes:

having rode many makes of bike's over the years, some great some not.
And having toured the EU etc many times and ended up with BMW's, never had problems with any of mine over the years.
toured on a blackbird but could not live with the consumable cost's.:(
sadly due to a major off i had to part with my gs and now ride a much lighter transalp which is fine BUT it has no soul, character etc. It's a bike you ride and not love.
would i go back to BMW ? you bet your arse i would and hope too when the new 650/800 prices drop.
to come on this site and knock BMW is to say the least ignorant as they are so much more than just a bike.
i miss mine more than any bike i have had in the last 30 years which speaks volume's and I've had quite a few.
my 2p worth.
PS.
check out this site as there is so much more than just the BMW knocking section/society.:beerjug:

Handbags at dawn! You have made me smile though! Superior? Why would i be superior? Don't look for communists under your bed when there aren't any........

Incidently, by the tone of your post, do you see yourself as being above instruction in any discipline?

well what can i say

My bm gs has done 34k , it comes apart nicely for service and repair, it starts first time, the dealers are by and large very good.
Its not exactly fast, but who wants to lose their license anyway?.
It returns between 45 and 54 mpg, it has no chain to grease and wear out, it doesnt burn oil, tyres last 8000 miles or more, it goes round bends like they arent there, it goes up hills , like they arent there.
You can put so much luggage on it, you wouldnt believe it possible, and still ride it quick and fast, and the luggage dont leak water, or fall off.
It has shovel loads of torque, enough to pull out tree stumps, and tow broken down jap crap.
MCN has just rated it the best all rounder ,ive just done 3000 miles in 10 days and it didnt miss a beat, true i get a dead arse from time to time, but it stops you falling asleep.
Its got some great features and some crap ones too, but it has soul,it has presence, its the only bike were lots of people seem to come up to you and talk to you, and enquire which continent of the planet you have been to recently.
The Jap stuff just seems to be ignored, dont know why?some of it is quite good, then again some isnt.
For example, look at the oil cooler on the the v strom, behind the exhaust downpipe and right behind the front wheel,i wouldnt take it off road to a tesco car park , let alone a gravel fire road.
The bm gs seems to enjoy itself, its almost a living thing, bizarre as it may sound, it seems to enjoy chasing other bikes and seeing them off, getoorf my patch!!!she goes..
Its up for sale at the moment, time for a newer one, its a tossup between an 1150 se or a triumph tiger(which i have yet to test ride)but i dont think the tiger will carry all whats needed for a 2 up 2 week camping tour of europe, only the bimmer will cut the mustard, as the other guy said" a tractor" its just bombproof.( to a point)
So before anybody complains about the GS, get on it, ride it for 900 miles fully loaded in a day, then you are qualified to complain about it.
i certainly would recommend it, yep its heavy, but you dont get blown sideways on the autobahns, and you can fix most things yourself, try getting the rear wheel out of a pan at the side of the road, try getting the exhausts off a fireblade, when all the fasteners are corroded, mine arent.
its not generally good at any one thing, its a jack of all trades and master of none, go buy one, give it time youll love it forever...
i think we should have a competition to see who can find the highest mileage bike, ive seen them with 300,000 miles on the clock, ask steptoe, i dont think a jap bike will get anywhere near that without major heart surgery.......swalk

Blackbird

Totally agree with the sentiments about not knocking Beemers, even though I ride a Blackbird. Its an 08 so it may be some time in the future but I am going to ride another GS1200 OR 1150 but this time for a much longer time as on reflection I did not test ride the GS1200 for anywhere the amount of time I needed to get into what it is about. I do know that having just been in France and Spain I was very envious of how comfortable the guys looked when they passed me on their GS's.

I do however have to defend the jap bikes against Kent Oil Heads views with regard to high mileage as I recently read an article on one of the mags detailing high mileage bikes and I do know one of these was a Blackbird.

I also know that when abroad wheter on a Beemer, Italian or Jap Bike if you are broken down you can rely on one of our biking comrades to pull up and offer assistance.

I wonder whether I am going to be the first non GS rider to subscribe to this site !
