Just popped down to Poole Quay. Start the bike up to come home and there is a clunk and then absolutely no power - nothing at all. When i turn the ignition, there is nothing - no noises, power or anything. Going back down with a flashlight/fuses/carol nash recovery number but any suggestions most appreciated. Thanks in advance. 2003 1150GS

Hi - yep - checked that - tried it both ways, but nothing. I am thinking it will be something really obvious, but I flicked the ignition on, all the lights came on as normal then i think that as soon as i pressed the ignition everything died.

A clunk????

Sounds like a flat battery....or a jammed starter.

The flat battery usually sounds like a rapid series of clunks or clicks as the starter tries to engage, or a single clunk as the armature throws out but there's no power to do anything.....

Do the lights dim as you try it??

If they do , but go back to normal brightness when you release the start button it could be a jammed starter.....try putting it in gear and rocking it back and forwards to release it.....

If they just dim out, the battery's shagged....if there are people around, you may be able to push start it ...if that works, leave it running for 10 mins (but watch the temp) then you may be able to ride away as normal.......

HTH...good luck!! :)

When you say 'Nothing....no power at all'...do you mean that there`s not even any lights on at all, either ??

Check the battery lead connections....just possible with tank still on if you remove the seat.

Also, try waggling the wiring that comes from the switch block at the bottom of the ignition switch barrel.....the wiring loops around to the left and goes to a connector block just under the front lip of the tank.
It`s fairly common for the switch feed wire to break within the sheathing.

A clunk???

Could that of been the sound of the battery hitting the ground. Check that it hasn't fell off :thumb

Was it a clunk?

Could it of been more of a clonk?

Oi....behave yerself...the man's stuck......in the dark....with a dead bike. :nono

Could it have been a 'click' rather than a clunk or a clonk????

:D

Bateman....the clock thing could be relevant...if it's reset to zero, it's because the battery's droped below a certain limit....that indicates a duff or low battery, or a jammed starter that all your current is being wasted on that drops the voltage that low...if the clock stays on the right time though, it means it's a switch, connection or cut out problem.......

Try by-passing the solenoid if you can. I.m not sure were it is but it sounds like its failed. Batteries dont loose all their power in an instant so it must be a switch and the only switch that effects everything is the solenoid. Ps i dont understand the clunk!

Well, thanks to Carols Gash and a friendly recovery truck, I am now back at home, clunks, clinks and all :D Waited an hour for the guy and when he said "whats the problem" I said there was absolutely no power. I blipped the alarm and the indicators flashed (they hadn't on previous attempts), and all the dash lights came on. So i thought it may be fixed. Pressed the starter button and everything just went dead again. No clock, no lights, absolutely zilch. No sign of life at all.

I think the battery is ok - it was one of those Hawkers which I have had for about 3 months. When I turn the key nothing at all happens, no lights, clunks, anything. I'll take a look tomorrow, though not sure I'll get very far given that I have only just passed my "Servicing 101 - Oil Changes" under the supervision of PikeyDave. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Will check the battery connections in the light tomorrow. Replaced the battery a couple of months ago and for some reason ended up with a spare bolt once I had put everything back together. Couldn't figure out where it come from so put it to the side for now :nenau

There's the clue right there !

You replaced the battery and i'll bet one of the terminal screws is loose.
Just touching for lights but not enough for starter current.

The clunk is the solenoid throwing the starter gear in and then just stopping dead - with a clunk.

betcha :thumb

Will check the battery when I get back from work but, if the connection had come loose, wouldn't my alarm interpret that as a broken connection and therefore activate/go off? The alarm seems to be fine though I guess it could be running off its own little battery. Its a datatool system 3

Side stand cut out :nenau

Didn't leave it in gear like me did you and call out the AA:nenau  what an arse I felt :o

Jon

Most of the time there is no power at all - no lights, clock etc. Just took another look and the power was there, all lights etc, then before I had chance to press the ignition, I heard a slight clonk (I think somewhere near the fusebox/relays) then everything cut out. Just having a wiggle of the wires now and, if I know I can figure out what the solenoid is, take a look. Although a look is probably as much as I will do. :nenau

If it is the sidestand cutout then I think I still get power to the dash/lights/clock etc
