Help, whats this ?

While inspecting my brakes i noticed what seems to be a huge oil leak above the right hand cylinder. Anyone have any ideas about where it may be coming from and how serious it is ?

Bike is an R1150GS 2003, twin spark with 43k miles.

Excuse the rust etc, the bike is used all year round !

Check your oil temperature sensor isn't leaking. It's the thing sticking out of the top of the engine on the right hand side just below the fuel tank. I looks a bit like a spark plug - can't think of another image at the moment.

I had a right hand side oil leak on my 02 GS last year. It turned out to be the sensor. I took it off, cleaned the contact surfaces, put it back on, cleaned the engine, went for a thrash. Problem solved. Enough oil leaked to cover the whole of the engine, exhausts, my boots, etc... so the oil "travelled" so that could be your problem. Of course, it could be something entirely different and I have no idea what it could be.

That's not a huge oil leak - a little bit of oil goes a long way! Particularly when dirst sticks to it.

Agreed it's almost certainly the oil temp sensor - remove the tank, clean up the area, remove the sensor, fit a new crush washer and re-fit the sensor and tank, job done.

The oil pressure sensor and oil pressure switch are the same thing - left hand side behind the sight glass. We're talking about the oil temperature sensor.

My 1100 GS had a leaking oil pressure switch, but it was working ok, the dash light was turning off after engine start-up, but it was leaking a lot of oil... So much that I had to add ~ 1 liter of oil between every change (10k km).

So I washed that part of the bike with water jet and cleaned everything there, then replaced the faulty switch. In the washing process, I managed to burn my coil (100 eur spent for my stupidity).

OK try this, I can see your out of practice but have a go at degreasing the area and keep a check on it for a few miles, from the pics it looks worse than what it is , a combination of oil mist and dirt and in the meantime I do abit of checking. If you can keep all that 'character' in one piece we go for a early morning blast soon.
