help with morocco again

Was wondering if Tim or anyone can suggest anything for the below
I have booked the boat to Spain 29th April, will have one week in Morocco I have 742 map and Garmin 550 and Mapsource I have few questions 1) is it best to pre book the boat from Spain to Morocco 2) I was thinking of heading down to Erfoud then across to Quarzazate any idea’s where can I go between these points or after this in the time frame I have. 3) Will I need to use TKC’s or can I use tolerances.

Jules,

1. No need to book the ferry, just turn up at the port and buy your ticket. Watch out for the ticket touts when entering the port, just park up out side and buy your ticket inside the building, we always use the Algeciras - Ceuta crossing which seems to be quicker and a lot less hassle. You then have the border to deal with 4km down the road once across the water.
2. That really depends on the type of road you want to travel on?
3. Again, your tyre choice will depend on what type of terrain you will be traveling on. If you are on your own and don't fancy venturing off the tarmac then I would stick to Tourances (note spelling ). If you are going to be doing some of the pistes then fit a new pair of TKC's just before you go, these should last you 4 -5,000 miles no problems.

Hi, Don't buy a return ticket, as we got caugut by just missing the ferry in the harbour on the way home, we had a return ticket for a different company, had to wait a while, so buy a one way each time, this leaves a better selection, when you arrive at the port, buy a ticket for the next ferry.

As for the GPS do a search for the Maroc Topo softare, it is not "route-able" but gets you around, handy through the larger places like Fes.

Do as many Pistes as possible, it is a great place, enjoy.

No need to wait - get a ticket for the next crossing, and when you reach the other side return the unused ticket and they'll give you a full refund for the unused part.

"GARMIN GPS NAVIGATION
The coverage of Morocco included in the Atlantic basemap loaded in Garmin Streetpilot/Quest units is actually more detailed and extends further south than the coverage shown in Mapsource. Compare them side-by-side to see.

The best solution is the free-of-charge Marokko Topo maps at http://www.island-olaf.de/travel/marokko/gps.html I have travelled extensively with these maps and found the roads and tracks are accurate. The most recent version is December 2007. For best results on the road only download the street maps to the GPS unit (i.e. remove the topo overlay from the download) as otherwise you can get confused between contour lines and tracks.

The Marokko Topo map segments don't take up much storage space as they don't include routing information. Consequently, when you come to plan a route using roads, you'll find the GPS will only use the original basemap roads. Which leads to the second point, that GPS navigation in Morocco is best done as 'off-road' straight lines between known waypoints.

Don't bother buying tracklogs of Moroccan pistes, the vast majority of the pistes are already on Maroc Topo. "
