Picked up my first s/h R1200GS a couple of weeks ago and promptly zipped off to France for a week on it. Love it!

However, I'm getting a lot of vibration off the front brake. I don't think it's the ABS trying to cut in - it feels more like a bent disc.

Bike has done 12,000 miles (05 plate), and the dealer serviced for me before I took delivery. I have a nasty feeling this sort of problem won't be covered by the warranty!

Are there any known problems with the front brakes?

A couple of things to look at:

  • It could be disc of inconsistent thickness - does the vibration slow as the bike slows?
  • Try chamfering the leading edge of the pad material
  • Try cleaning all pad dust away from the disc and caliper
  • Could there be any oil contamination on the discs?

If all else fails, take it back under warranty.

Any known problems with the front brakes? :D

Do a search and you'll find loads complaining about them. On the other hand there are loads which are happy. I was one of those complainants and went through 3 sets of disks, pads, etc. No joy. With the warranty shortly to expire I traded it for a new GSA. Could have been the bike or the year (04) but this new'un is a different kettle of fish completely - awesome brakes... so far.
