Help with new toy - Non GS

ok, sounds like you've got the petrol and air sorted out....
I presume the inlet manifolds are tight/not perished and have the screws for the carb balancing in place
what sort of ignition is it? points and mechanical stuff or electronic?? I'd check the timing is set correctly, ensure that the advance retard mechanism is working fine and make sure that the setup is tight and not loose and finally check the plugs. next thing would be to check that the battery/charging circuits are ok,
does the starter motor turn over easily? this would check that the earth connection is fine. have you tried with the handlebars moved from left to right? just in case the ign/killl switch wiring is dodgy??

A couple of thoughts Rob...

May be way off track but had a similar problem on an old Triumph. Turns out the valve timing was off by one tooth, might be worth a check. Although from your threads it doesn't look as though you've had the engine apart. Assume valve clearances are OK.
What happens at 3k, does it cut out, mis-fire or just hold there and not rev higher? Will it hold 3k with the choke off?
Have you tried building the revs slowly?

Just in case you've had one of my senior moments have you got both fuel taps open? It may be one of them is blocked, have the feed pipes been changed so you've got seperate for each carb with no Y-piece?

Interested to know how you get on.

Good luck mate. Jim

I suppose if I held the throttle open long enough the bike would slowly crawl it's way above 3k. If I turn the choke off the bike slowly winds down with lots of banging and popping...it doesn't just cut out. The ignition is standard points, I've set the gaps and set the timing statically, if I could get the bike to run cleanly I could get a strobe on it. I tried to order a pair of new condensors from Motorworks but I guess they were having a busy day. I've stripped the carbs again and everything seems spot on and very clean. The fuel pipes are all new and are connected so that there is a fuel tap per carb with no connection between the two carbs.

I've just fitted honda switchgear and completely rewired the front of the harness to remove the cheapo crimp connectors. The starter motor spins easily and the battery is charging when the engine runs.

Starting to get really pissed off with it now :p1zzed: So I'm going to leave it alone untill the condensors arrive. checking the valve timing sounds like a good idea though.

Thanks for the help guys.

Take a bow mr 'smarty pants' Motomartin :bow I got a couple of carb rebuild kits and a tin of carb cleaner through the post today. I gave all of the hidden airway passages a good soaking and then left them for a couple of hours, rebuilt the carbs using the new seals and away she went. I've taken her upto 50 so far and everything seems ok but I suspect the mixture is slightly out, the jets are all standard and I have K&N's fitted...any ideas on what sort of increase I need in jet sizes? I was just going to try lifting the needle a notch.

i thank yew - i thank yew :):)

been there got the t-shirt, Rob

At least its running now.

10% up on the mains for filters and std pipes for starters

high end misfire will be the points - get electronic if you're keeping it

charging light at low revs will be brushes

stiff gearbox is linkages

bad suspension is moto-guzzi

Anyway - looks good - nice job

now, do i get a free 'motoswitch' ?? :)

cheers
