The full story is as follows:
I downloaded the Speed Camera database and installed it (without trouble) on to my 2610 along with maps of the UK. It was working fine and dandy.

Then I bought a 1Gb card for the GPS and loaded most of Western Europe and a newer version of the Speed Camera database. The speed cameras no longer show at all (at any zoom level), although they are listed on the device in 'Map Info'. I can enable/disable them and it makes no difference. The Map-set (including the database) is only 920 Mb, so it is within the capacity of the card.

I have now tried the same loading routing three times without success - I have double checked that they are in the Map-set list that is being transferred to the unit, and I am certain that I haven't changed any of the settings on the unit.

What on earth am I doing wrong??? :(

I don't think you are doing anything wrong. I suggest that you back up your waypoints, routes, and tracks to your computer (using MapSource), and then do a 'factory reset' on your GPSR. This blows out the non-vol memory of the GPSR, and sets it back to original condition. There is a special button combination that you press when you power the GPSR on to cause it to reset. I forget what it is, but I am sure someone else knows and can post it here.

Once you do this, I think everything will work just fine. On the off chance that everything does not work just fine after you do that, reload your CF card with the maps (first!), then, load your Custom POIs. That should get things working right.

Two other things you should do first, if you have not already done them:

1) Make sure your GPSR has the latest and greatest software. The best way to do this is by using the Garmin WebUpdater program.

2) Read this post here on the forum -Speed Camera Databases - MPH or km/h, but not both... - which discusses the MPH vs. km/h issue when you load custom POIs. If you plan to use the custom POI database in the UK, you will need to specify 'MPH' at the beginning of the upload process, using the Custom POI Loader program.

OK - I backed it up and downloaded / re-installed the latest software (it was already up-to-date, but I thought I'd re-install just to be safe). Problem is exactly the same. And to further confound the issue, when I put the (old) 256Mb card back in with the UK maps, the damn thing works fine. I have double checked that the Camera database/overlay thing is loaded and am now stumped again. It is deffo listed in the maps info screen on the unit.

Sorted. Operator-bloody-error. Note for the future: When selecting the speed-camera maps, zoom right out to 70 miles to make sure you have both of the segments selected, not just the mainland Europe one (which overlaps the uK one by a fair margin...). Tit.

Ahhhhh - most interesting. Thanks VERY much for getting back to us with the cause of the problem, that was darn thoughtful of you.

I guess we are all going to have to be quite careful with speed camera databases that we buy from third party sources. All the different organizations that sell speed camera databases have their own individual formats for organizing the data, and not all of these folks document things well.

Personally, I buy my speed camera databases from a German outfit called www.raderfalle.de, because they have superb coverage of Continental Europe (where I do most of my riding), and their website allows you to choose how you want the database constructed, and what countries you want included. However - their website is in German only, which I suppose could be a problem if you are not familiar with that language.

Perhaps in the future, when anyone posts a question related to speed camera databases, it would be a good idea to name the vendor of the database and also provide a link to their website.
