Just went out for a ride, put zumo on Gramin cradle, usually switches on automatically, nothing, dead as a dodo, press the on button, still dead as a dodo. Anyone got any ideas.

Thanks

Danny

Try pulling the battery out and putting it back in?

How do you do that, can't see the battery.

On the back you will see an allen key bolt/screw.

Get the allen key out of the box and unscrew it. The battery will pop out. Then put it back. Screw back the screw.

It should work.

I have no idea why this happens but has happened to me a couple of times and this is the solution.

To test the unit isn't fecked, you can put it in the cradle without the battery then start your bike. It should power up.

Believe it or not but its fairly common :augie

I sent mine back to Garmin under warranty after it died after 11 months occaisional use and they sent me a refurbed one

If the warranty has ran out they'll probably charge you for a repair

My 550 did this after only 2 weeks, popped it into my car cradle and it fired up no problem.

It was the bike cradle itself that was goosed, a common problem. When my replacement arrived i gave it a generous helping of dielectric grease at all the electrical connection points and touch wood havent had a problem since.

Biker

Eventually got the battery off, left it off for a few minutes, replaced the battery, still dead, won't work on the bike cradle, the car cradle or the mains lead. I'm not far from Garmin HQ (Europe) so I'll pop it in there in the week, they are usually pretty good to me, they have fixed other models while I wait in reception, will let you know the outcome, not good for a very expensive piece of equipment with occasional use and less than two years old.

Sat in reception for a while and then came the news, they confirmed that it was dead, nothing else could be done with that unit, they then took my credit card details and charged me £115 for a refurbed unit with a years warranty that would be posted to me in the next ten days. After sleeping on it I thought, hold on a minute, less than two years old and not with constant use either, so I rang Garmin and said that I wanted to take it further, got put through to a supervisor who (after explaining my disgust in the politest of language) agreed with me and refunded my £115. This has once again restored my faith in Garmin and made me glad I didn't buy (imho) an inferior product from another manufacturer.

Out for a lovely 200 mile run this morning and decided to keep track of my route with my 2 week old 550.
Stopped off for a coffee after a while and when I got back on the bike Zumo was dead and no Allen key with me to take battery off:(.
This is the 2nd time that it has gone dead which is really annoying but I know it is a common problem.
Has anyone tried using there Zumo without the battery at all? Will it still be waterproof or is there something on the market that you can apply to the battery contacts to stop it going dead?

Regards

Rob

I've had my Zumo for 12 months or so, and the only time it has died on me was when I let it turn itself off - ie. at the warning screen asking if you want to continue on Zumo battery power after switching off the bike I just ignored the options. Since then I have always made the choice....

The real PITA is that it takes a couple of minutes before the Canbus shuts down the power, so it can be easy to forget if you stop and leap straight off the bike.

So try switching the Zumo off with the power switch, or tell it that you do/don't want it to continue on battery and you should be OK. Just don't let it decide for itself :rob

Amazingly I've came to this exact same conclusion myself in the last week. I leave my Zumo on the bike as I've got a Touratech Lockable mount thingy and I've also had issues when I've left it to switch off itself.
:thumb2 Good advice.

Just had the same dead Zumo. Why do we, the paying punters, accept an expensive piece of kit which has such a basic fault? Removing the battery has worked but it is not really satisfactory. I have 2 TomTom units which do some odd things but have never let me down.

Mine has refused to turn on today, tried removing battery, but no go. seven months old, does anyone know the best way to contact garmin? (phone or email) thanks allen.

I had a zumo 400 do this just before easter- one day no problem, the next, totally dead. Did all the resrt instructions and removed the battery to no avail.

Rang Garmin using the support number listed on their website and explained the problem- they gave me a reference number to quote and asked me to send it back.

Less than a week later I have been upgraded to a 550- how happy am i?

And it came with 2009 maps!!!

I registered it, and I qualified for a free upgrade to CN 2010!!

Now that is customer service.

Thanks to this thread I now have a working 550 again!

I went to use mine in the car yesterday after adding an address to it on Wednesday when it was working fine. Put it in the cradle yesterday and it was dead as a dodo, tried charging it on the mains for a few minutes and still nothing so had to resort to printing off my route on AA.com!

Took the 550 with me anyway and stuck it in the cradle to charge it up and still nothing. Got home last night and plugged it into the mains, after 6 hours still nothing.

Read this thread this morning, took the battery out, put it back and hey presto its working again :thumb2

I'm on my fifth unit (Zumo 550) in two and a half years. Original died after about three months. Replaced with new boxed unit. That one died. Replaced with a recon unit. That one froze. Replaced with a recon unit which has recently died and been replaced with another recon unit. I can't fault Garmin for customer service. All this has been done with no hassle. It's a bit annoying though when your told "there isn't a known problem". " you must be unlucky"....F
