I'm out on the road and my Zumo 550 is playing up badly :blast:blast

The touch screen has become scratched up and now it behaves as it is being pressed to the left of it most of the time. When it's switched on it highlights the 'where to' square as though it's being pressed and it's a devil to get it on to the map part :(

Anyone had this happen on the go and gotten round it anyway..?

Can the touchscreen be deactivated and the unit still used with the buttons?
Is there a good way to perhaps clean and soften the scratching that may be causing the problem.?

I'm Southern Bosnia at the moment and the maps are feckin' hopeless round here (think I've been sent down storm drains and amongst the minefields, but that's another story) but it's good to have whereabouts I am on the unit :thumb

Any suggestions welcome..

Ta and cheers in advance,
Rob

Not an expert but hop I can help a little.

First step is to do a hard reset. Press top button on left and off button at once.

Second - nothing abrasive on the screen - ordinbary soad actually works very well.

The unit can't be used without the touch screen. like the Quest say.

No help at short notice, but Garmin do a very good value exchange service for when you get back.

How about getting hold of a real cheapie satnav for a stop gap? Could have a go at arranging for one to be expressed out if not available 'in country'.

Sorry I can't be more help but PM me if I can be of any practical help here in the UK.

Mr Badger,

Thanks for this, much appreciated :thumb2

I'll try with the soap.. I've now booked a hotel and plotted my way down to Montenegro tonight with the map so all's OK for this moment.

That's a good call with the cheapie.. I will see what I can find. If not, I really appreciate the offer and may well take you up on that sir.

Funny enough I had a back-up old 3 plus and it's stopped working now :(

Anyway what a place this is :thumb

To calibrate the screen
press and hold the power button (for about a minute) until the screen calibration opens

Somewhere on the settings menu is a screen re-calibrate setting - where you press in particular places so it can recognise where you're pressing. I can't remember what it's called and don't have mine with me at work. Nor do I know how you'd get to that screen if the screen isn't working in the first place.

EDIT: post above is what I meant.

.

Rob, I agree with the above but a full re-set would be best done by taking the battery out.

There is a little grub screw on the rear of the device, unscrew, remove, replace, rescrew and voila, it might work. :blast

On my old StreetPilot 2720 it started to behave in an increasingly odd manner as if the screen was being pressed. In the end I split the case and cleaned the screen and rubber gasket. Once reassembled it was as good as new. Must have been road grime/grit trapped and applying enough pressure on the screen.

Thanks again for all the replies.. fiddling about with it now, hoping for the best.. :thumb2

IT IS the one I told you.. unit off, press and hold power button for about a minute until calibration screen comes up, press the dots and thats it.. IT seems a long time pressing but the screen WILL come up.

get a local one - it will give you the mapping for the balkans as well as for europe!

Its all poo - has a shop near Belgrade - pop in there and he can probally do you a good deal.... though he is very tight fisted.... but has a wonderful manageress called Alex (Sandra).... say hi from me...

There is a software update to version 5 released a few days ago(?) that is supposed to address touch screen location issues. Might help if you can get it onto your device.

OK, Mr Badger's suggested 'soft soap' routine has done the trick for now, but I think I'll look up itsallpoo as Mr Bell has suggested.

Happy(er) days :thumb2
