Know that there's another thread going on with this bar and tank protection set but that seems to have morphed into a thread about fitting lights... but just wondered if many people has experiences with fitting this bar set?

I live miles away from any dealer so am going to have to fit them myself. But before I do so wanted to see if other forum users have fitted them and if there are any major issues with them.

Have a few questions...

a. From looking at intructions (which are in German so not easy to understand!) - it seems as though you have to remove a main Torx bolt which supports the footrest/stand assembly sub-frame. Is this correct?

b. The is another hole already on the engine casings which looks as though this is the other mounting point for the bottom of the bars. This looks straight forward enough.

c. On 2007 model year 1200GS there is an exhaust monitoring system that bolts into the header pipe coming from the cylinder. Should the bars, when fitted, clear this to the outside or inside of the monitor plug? (i.e. should I unscrew the exhaust monitors to mount the bars or do the fit outside of the monitor plug?)

d. Anyone have any close-up photos of the bars when fitted? I've been trying to find some on the t'internet but not much around.

Cheers.

Perfect! Thanks very muchly.... lots of good info there and certainly clarifies everything. Cheers. :)

Got everything??

You can't be far from me. I fitted the engine bars (H&B) to my 1200 but not yet tried the tank protector parts (soon if money permits).

Have you got all the tools ie torque wrench etc that you need?

Lend you if not.

Hey Martin,

Thanks for the offer... all I need is a Torx T55 thigymajig and I'll be there... was going to get a set anyway as I've got a Ducati that's peppered with them too!

Might just give you a call if that's ok?

Cheers,

Naresh.

No Problem!

A Duke too.

I was a Duke man until one very bad day in 2005! Monsters and 916 SP.

Always have had Dukes... currently a Multistrada... but selling that as I need the cash for all the spares/options on the GS :D

Have you seen the new 1098.... sorely tempted... need something for that .... Italian fix ... stunning looking thing.:P

Clives instrucions linked to in post no2 are a) very good and b) very ebntertaining.

Main point I would make about the fitting is loose assemble the bars on the bike. If you tighten one side before the other you will not be able to get the holes aligned to bolt the sides to the cross joining piece.

And they do a very good job when you fall off - (me=champion 1200 faller-offer :thumb )

Having fitted my H&B engine bars on Monday, I can vouch for Clives instructions - they were spot on :thumb . Very straight forward and took me an hour to do tops. Most of that was pushing the bike back and forth in a single garage to get at both sides of the bike and then doing the maths to convert Nm into ft-lbs for my aged torque wrench.
Fitted the H&B tank bars at the same time and that was a much more protracted affair. Lack of clearance for the U-bolts under the beak was the main issue. Still - jobs done and looks good IMHO.
All I need now is some more 'play time' to get my PIAA 510's fixed on the tank bar.....

Since I'm on my Christmas Holidays and the missus has gone shopping in London - I've managed to get the engine bars and tank protectors all fitted today.... :D Have to admit the instructions were toptastic... all worked perfectly.

The only thing with the tank protectors (and backing up the comment above) is it ain't harf fiddly getting the u-bolts secured. There's just not much clearance between the beak and the the subframe to which the protector bars mount. With a 10mm spanner, you can only turn about an 1/8th of turn successfully.

Anyone else considering fitting them should buy a 10mm ratchet spanner as this is going to make you life (and the pain in your back :rob ) a lot easier going.

Now that they're fitted though - the do look the puppy's privates! There's also a couple of brackets that look perfectly placed for some auxilliary lights... right. where's the Motobins catalogues then....:thumb
