Hi,

I was wondering if any body had a Hepco & Becker top box on thier 650 GS? If so could you post or e-mail me a photo?

Thanks,
Dan

Method of attachment (and Intro, too)

G'day.

I'm an Aussie (old lady) newbie to this 650 forum. Bought my black F650GS end of December 06, in preparation for a 4 year RTW trip, starting at the Isle of Man in May/June, :clap :clap and currently have about 4,000km on it.

Also have an R1200GS, but broke my neck, back and a few other bits when I came off it in sand in the Western Australian outback, back in August. The R12 is still being repaired.

Anyway, back onto the topic - How does the H&B topbox actually attach to the rack, please? Is it easily removable?
I checked the abovementioned photos, and would like my topbox to be further forward, more above the rear axle, so may have to have a "copy" of the H&B rack made, but need info on how the box attaches.

All help/advice appreciated.

Thanks
Margaret

Hi Margaret you clumsy bugger...fancy breaking all those bits. Theres none of that malarky goes off here as we`re all expert riders who never fall off.
My last incident broke 2 vertabrae but I never fell off.

Wish we had sand to fall off into.

The H&B top box mounting bolts to the BMW back rack. There are 4 bolts on top and 2 either side of the rear lamp. I`ve never taken it off but from memory the 2 bolts at the back were a bit tricky to get in so I would`nt want to do it often.
I remember that Touratech or someone else made a single seat for the GS with a tool box or similar where the rear seat would be. I would think that would be a good start to fabricate some mountings for the H&B rack over the axle.

I must admit that the top box where it is does get shook up a fair bit.

Good luck with the trip.

Does the box latch onto the squeezed bit of tube on the rack then and hold onto the upright?

here's something i came across that might give you inspiration........

Here's a piccie of the H & B top box mounting bracket for the 650. It's just resting on the bike in the photo... waiting to be shotblasted and plastic coated.

The top box, alloy or plastic, hooks under the front loop and then the lock at the rear of the top case snaps under the rear of the carrier. It's very strong!

Hope this of use....

Piccie with top box on... if of any use!

The plastic top box is also very robust, looks good, and uses the same mounting rack!

Single seat ... and aux fuel tank

The H&B top box mounting bolts to the BMW back rack. There are 4 bolts on top and 2 either side of the rear lamp. I`ve never taken it off but from memory the 2 bolts at the back were a bit tricky to get in so I would`nt want to do it often.

Good luck with the trip.

I'm having the dual seat remodelled into a single (comfortable!!) seat, and the space where the pillion seat currently is will become an aluminium auxilliary fuel tank, holding roughly 10 litres. Very flat profile, so that I can carry my topload widemouth duffle with tent, etc etc on top of the aux tank.

Is that the Gobi topbox in the piccie, Mick? I'm getting the "Junior" topbox, 45 litres, that holds 2 helmets, altho it will travel virtually empty, so that I can put all my riding gear away securely when wandering around (on foot) sightseeing in strange places.

I'm not a fan of topboxes hanging way out off the rear. The R12GS's is also too far back and too high, for my liking.

Cheers
Margaret

Topbox ease of removability

Anyway, back onto the topic - How does the H&B topbox actually attach to the rack, please? Is it easily removable?

Sorry, I meant: Is the Topbox easily removable -not the rack. :nenau

Hi Margaret

Yup... it's the Gobi Top box, and very easy removable! I don't normally like top cases, but needs must!

I had the BMW single seat with tool box behind... looked great and the extra space was handy, but the seat was short and not so very comfy.

Petrol weighs... try to keep it low down and between the axles. Keep the lighter stuff for the top of the 'bike... not always easy though :thumb
