Replaced the luggage carrier on my 1100GS at the weekend (the silver metal doofer under the pillion seat which everyone now tells me is made of cheese and cracks at the drop of a hat - also see item no 1 in the diagram thingy)

Involved removing and replacing rear rack.

Having done so, have 2 large washers left over (why don't I photograph even simple jobs as I go along to remove risk of forgetting where I got things from :blast :blast :blast ) - see photies

Anyone got a similar rack and got any idea where the large washers should be ?

I would say on top of the rack and under the bolt heads. There appears to be a mark on the rack that indicates a washer was there before. The washer would stop the bolt pulling through once you put a load on the rack by spreading the load.

That's what I thought at first, but the marks may be misleading, in that I tried to fit the big washers in exactly that way (leaving the marks in the process I think - but I like your detective work :D), after replacing the rack, but in doing so (trying to fit the bigger washers I mean), the allen bolts then wouldn't reach far enough down to the inner mudguard and rear light cluster assembly wotsit thingummy.

I also have photos of the H&B rack before replacement of the aluminium/cheese luggage carrier, and the big washers weren't on top of the rack but under the allen bolt heads.

Thanks for replying, though :beerjug:

Looking at the twin, parallel, marks on the washers either side of the holes, I'd say that they are item 4 in the diagram and may be surplus to requirements with your H&B rack.

Cheers
