Probably just a poor maintenance regime,
Those gears get a hammering,more so with the extra load of a sidecar,
Most of the boxes we strip show signs of wear on the primary’s,these were pretty bad.
Unfortunately we’ve exhausted our stock of decent used ones now.
I guess the good news is, that new ones are available,,,,at a hefty price.
