A friend of mine was in the market for a new bike...He rode all his life and likes to go 2-up.I told him try the 1250GS or 1250GS-ADV.So he took a test-ride.He liked it a lot and so did his wife.Especially the T-L impressed him as also the drive-shaft was a plus as also the easy handling for such a big bike. But he could not take the bike home immediately because the Hayes calipers have to be changed for Brembo before the bikes can be sold...The next day he tried a 1290 SADV-S which his wife did not like as much as the rear seat and seating position was not as good as on the GS.He did not like the chain as much coming from a big Concours. But he still bought the KTM because of the stronger top-end ! I hope BMW is listening and the next GS will have 160 hp...Get your heads out of your azzes and stop holding back :thumb

Yawn, you are one dreary fucker you really are!

You’re an utter fuckwit

If he mostly rides 2-up he will be changing the KTM pretty soon.

You don't say how long his life has been, but if he is going 2-up and on nice, scenic roads, of that 160hp craved for, he might use 70 of them..... I wonder how long the tyres will last too? A whole trip, or will they need replacing to come home? :nenau:augie

Can we have a photo of mates wifes arse, so we can establish the HP needed to pull away satisfactorily?

Utter rubbish! Sorry to be so blunt.

My 1290 SAS is all day comfortable for rider and pillion with the small caveat that you do need to buy the powerparts seats.

Used to start fidgeting after a couple of hours on the 14 plate GSA. Wife not comfortable. Required a pair of his n her air hawk seat cushions for any kind of travel. Not needed on the KTM.

Return , bollox , had the 1290 for a month , the wife almost divorced me as uncomfortable and a rocking horse of bluntness . Thank god the BM was still in garage grinning ....................

So to summarise BMW lost the sale because of the lack of top end power and KTM won the sale despite the lack of telelever and shaft drive. I guess those 2 things aren’t really that important then and BMW should ditch them :thumb

So a STANDARD model is no good then Chris. Not if you have to change the seat.

PS. any news on new bike ?

My bike is better than yours :blast

Who gives a flying f*ck. The GS & KTM are fine bikes. Both have strength's and weaknesses - YOU make your own choice based on YOUR needs.

Choices changes as requirements do.

Never ridden a KTM of any size. The Sept EU4 2016 1200GS is more bike than I ever will need and fits me like a glove. This is MY choice

I don't think many sales will be lost because of a lack of power. Its irrelevant, once up to speed its only using a few ponies to keep it going. Further more. As all luggage is speed limiting You can't use the power you have on a GS anyway

Is Norcal part of the North Circular ?

If power was the requirement, why bother with the GS/GSA, why not go straight to the Ducati or KTM.

If comfort and shaft drive are the main attractions, you know what’s needed.

As the GS/GSA outsell the other marques in the same category by some considerable margin I don’t think BMW are likely to chase after a few more horse powers.

All these bikes have masses of power and in the former colonies where HD is the PTW of choice with straight roads it’s largely unimportant.

Wise words - had 10 boxer GS's over the years (last a 2014 GSA) and more recently had an 1190 Adventure and for last 3 years a 1290 SAS - all have been great bikes to ride although 2 of the 1200 GS's were rejected due to faults ;)

Happy to own either a GS or a KTM just at the moment the KTM package suits me better :beerjug:

I didn’t by a GS or a KTM because pretending you are some round the world adventurer type or off roading god with ya hyper polished soft roader is just a little too homosexually tainted for my liking.

I much prefer to pretend to be a bad ass American gun toting biker club dude that thrives on shagging fit young fillies and getting in to bar fights and doing illegal gun deals :D

I don't get the brand loyalty thing ??

If I want a new bike ..... I want a good one thats all. The S1000RR for example is a stunning bike. If i was going for a litre pure sports bike I'd probably pick that over anything else.

A naked middleweight? for me my little 790 is just awesome, and I suspect the 890 (haven't ridden that) is even better.

A tourer? Cant beat an RT at the moment in my opinion. Nothing much out there that rivals it for two up european distance.

My Tuono? Fuck me thats a good road bike! It is SUCH a good road bike. Stunning!

I just want a good bike - who gives a shit who its made by ...... :thumb2

In all honesty I don't know. I bought the bike off Nick Marshall with heated PP seats fitted.

A new bike would have to be at least as comfortable as the 1290. Its been the most all-day comfortable bike I've ever owned but I'll never knock GSA as theyre a great bike....but not my choice out of the two.
