No problems at all with the early ones, increasing problems with later models as BzW are stretched on production line and try to fix what wasn't broke.
(The final straw being the 1200);)

Flooky. When I was thinking of buying a 1150, I was unsure about the hight and weight. Luckily another member off this site leant me his 1150 one evening, just to see how I got on with it. His bike had done over 56,000 and still felt rock solid. Previously I had just been attracted to the looks of the 1150, but I was so impressed with the ride that it finally made my mind up there and then. Do your homework to see what they are selling for, and as long as you don't pay over the odds for one, you can sell it on again if you don't get on with it. I will be very very surprised if you don't like it though. ;) I for one would be interested to see what you thought of it after your test run - just post a reply to your own thread. You never know, if you post some of the bike details and a photo, you may even get some feedback on what it's worth.

Don't let first impressions fool you. After most Japanese machinery an 1150 feels like a tractor for the first half-hour.

It's not brilliant for filtering, although you will find the high sitting position great for dealing with traffic. But get out of London on it and on to some country roads, doesn't matter if they are bumpy.

In fact if you are a converting sports bike rider the bumpier the better, you'll be amazed at the difference.

The best advice I can give you is the same as I was given on the board last year when I was looking at getting a GS...
don't go for a short test ride... try and ride it for a couple of hours+. The first 30 minutes or so may seem a bit strange... then it kind of hooks you... then you just have to have one.

Good luck.

Thanks everybody i will let you know how i getting on, just wanted to make sure there were no worries with the early 1150.
thanks again see u all soon

Agreed, I had a short test ride last year and hated it, took me almost 12 months to get back on one, what a waste of a year

Sound advice..

When i had a test ride, it was for an hour and bit.. not really long enough. I was really unsure.. but took a gamble and bought the bike anyhow.

It is indeed wise advice to get a long test ride... the GS takes a bit of getting used too. Its has a different handling style to any other bike i have ridden todate. But i found it good and am happy with mine..

Hope you enjoy yours if you get one..

Yes, its gonna cost ya a lot of money, coz you will end up buying one, trust me!

When I rode tested my first GS some 15 months ago, it was done for one reason only, to prove once and for all that I hated it. After all, it looked odd and ugly and it was, as far as I was concerned an old mans stead. Hence, I would not be seen dead on a BMW.
So before I had even ridden it, I was so sure that I was going to hate it.

How wrong can anyone be?

In fact, within the first few miles of riding the darn thing I was grinning from ear to ear. :D

After a three hour road test on a brand new Adventure with just 200 miles on the clock, I had one huge regret, I had wasted so much of my biking life not on a GS.....which is a shame.
Nearly twelve months on and some 12,000 miles later, I still love it exactly the same as the day it rolled out the showroom.

I remember to this day, returning back to the dealer, taking my helmet off and sitting on the wall by the side of the bike and just staring at the bike, shaking my head in utter disbelief.

My other regret, is maybe I should have bought the Adventure, but I could not give you a valid and logical reason as to why.

Still......... theres always next year to put that one right........ :D

Nice post BTR!

Some refreshing honesty too.

There is something about a GS,' involving' is word that has been quoted.

They seems to match the mood!! Gentle tooling around is a pleasure. Start hustling along a bit and it seems to welcome the abuse.

Your are right about the cost tho...lol Especially with the plethora of shiny things available.
I have had to give myself a bit of a bollocking. Managed to convince myself that some bits are essential for safety/comfort/protection.
But added a beak for 'presence' coz thats a safety thing too right!!!!

Having had 20 odd bikes in the last 30 yrs including sensible ST100 for 3 years and a ' Busa' for 6 weeks.

( 'glancing' down in the eye of your own personal hurricane and seeing an indicated 200 MPH, is a defining biking/life moment. Flogged it shortly after when I realised my kids might want a couple more years out of me)
coz like a 911, every bloke should own one once in his life!!!

The GS ( the 1150 and now the 12) have given me more pleasure of ownership than anything I have had before!!!
That will probably change coz its going to break soon apparently.......:D

Thanks for all the replies, i have owned different bikes over the years but never a beemer,i went the sports bike route when i was younger then a triumph and at the mo a fazer thousand.
I always liked the g.s. and have had this site on my favourites for a while, but never took the plunge....til now! i bought it yippee!
picking the bike up next week, i had a good long test ride and decided it was great.
My only regret is i cant afford the adventure one , still, must not be greedy.

Hmm, I've had my 1200 for a month and it still sounds like a tractor. In fact during a recent ride down some small lanes in Wales, you could see farmers peering over the hedges thinking "ooh arr, is that the new John Deere model I hear?"

Love it to bits though :) (Bet someone picks up on that slightly unfortunate turn of phrase!)

don't forget...

all the extra money you'll need to put "bits" on it.
Remus,
Y Piece,
"Chip",
GPS,
Petrol,
more petrol,
even more petrol,
tyres,
more petrol...

Enjoy, just stay away from them 1200's:ymca :hapybnce:

Steve

"Enjoy, just stay away from them 1200's" That won`t be a problem as they`ll be miles in front with their superior engine performance & much lighter weight.
:D :whip
