Hi All,

As the title suggests I just purchased my first BMW, I picked up a used BMW R850R off a friend off this site needing work. After approx 20hours she now looks like this.

Both shocks were badly blown I got a used set of WP shocks for the 1150 off ebay which I fitted before riding the bike. I rode it on Saturday for the first time and am very impressed. Makes all the work on the bike worth while.

There is quite a noticeable knock when I accelerate hard in 2nd and 3rd gear from what feels like the shaft, I have never ridden a shaft drive before, is this normal? It only happens when I accelerate hard.

The noise is also brutal as standard, can anyone recommend a better sounding exhaust?

I'm on my second ....... the OEM screen keeps the summer bugs out of your teeth. Do your eyeballs vibrate at 70mph+? They appear to need careful balancing. Check for oxidisation in the accessory socket before plugging anything in or you will blow the fuse that controls, amongst other things, the indicators

Good choice for a first BM :thumb2

Most who have had them and think the grass is greener with something else, regret not keeping them. Me included. Enjoy

I've just sold mine and found it the most comfy seat I'd sat on, the engine is smoother than the 1150 and it handles amazingly with luggage. I'm not sure if I prefer the 1150GS yet.

I can't recall a knock from the shaft although they are pretty agricultural. I found the high screen caused buffeting so went for a small Puig one that worked well.

Enjoy.

Thanks, the knock is nothing I cant get used to, it feels slightly like the clutch is not fully disengaging and them the shaft kicks hard underneath me. Feels strange but again only happens when accelerating hard!

I am contemplating putting on a Wuedo screen, lower exhaust and cafe racer bars!

keep my bike clean will ya

and if your free get your ass down here to polish up my 1150

forget the extra just ride her and enjoy it

screen and maybe new back tyre all she needs.

forget exhausts etc until original rots

i have the knock on the 1150 now as well

its jsut when you dump the clutch its tthe gears kicking in, no chain or cush drive to take the sudden hit. reminds me of the massey 135 at home

The bike shouldn't do that. Get it checked out.

I had two, a 97 and a 2003. The 03 looked better, the 97 was more solidly built and had the more comforable seat. The engine's a lot less vibey than the 1150 and has enough poke, even in the Alps.

Happy travels,
Achim

!

Sounds like the usual M94 gearbox design fault problem :blast. Try a search and all will be revealed. :augie

Have a nice day..

looking foreward to seeing the 1150 john. Decided to turn the 850 into a cafe racer anyone done similar?

I was loaned an 850 like that a few years ago when I had an 1150 in for a service. Had a day charging around cambridgeshire on it with a couple of mates and was well surprised how good it was for such a low powered/heavy machine, and the comfiest seat I've ever sat on.

I was so impresssed that two years ago when a mate said a collegue of his was selling an 850GS I jumped at it, especially at less than 2 grand with only 24k on it. Two years on and it's bloody brill, way better than either the 11RS or 1150GS i've had before.

Ok it runs out of puff at three figures, but I have the Blackbird for that kind of fun, this one runs all year, all weathers, all kinds of rides. :thumb2
