Hi its my first time on the forum, have used the site and read some of the articles, use nippy normans etc,
My problem is this ive got a 2005 1200 GS, had it since new, just went out to start it after the recent snow,( been standing on side stand indoors for 12 weeks) got the dead no responce to starter button as if the battrey was dead flat, had battrey checked out at garage they say its fully charged, i would exspect that to be so as is on a optimate, friends have said it may be starter motor jammed or bad earth ? . ive rocked the bike with engine in gear, no diffrent. when you turn the ignition key to on it is very slow to respond but gradually the display lights up ,the front light appears dull , the horn sometimes works ,as do the warning lights, but not its usual bright ready to go display. when you press the start button you get a click and the display goes out, just like a dead battrey. apologise for useing this site to get me out of this fix but any help would be much appreciated. Guy in kent

It's dead.

Replace it.

The battery, not the bike :blast

If that's its first battery, you've done well at 4-5 years on it.

The problem with using an optimate is that it masks problems- it keeps the most voltage it can in the battery, which can actually be getting into pretty poor state, until it fails suddenly.

thanks will do just that, why did it test good/fully charged on garage test equipment, if its only the battrey like you say i think ive done well, the bikes been great up till now. thanks for help. Guy

Defo sounds like a battery, did the shop test for voltage or do a 'drop' test (checks what the battery does under load), a battery may have 12v+ but then when you want it to crank then it dies a death.

the man just put a volt meter over it and said it was fine, then he put another tester on and it read FULL CHARGED . is there a better battrey and should i buy from bmw or someone like nippy normans etc thanks for the support

Get some jump leads and try and jump start the bike from your car. If it starts, it's the battery. If it doesn't, it's something else.

Somewhat cheaper than £100 to find out it wasn't the battery.

Call me cheap. :thumb

you need to get it "load" tested to see really.

Cells are sulphated, battery is fecked.

Buy a new one.

Simples.
