Looking advice, has got quite a few Hi8 tapes from a canon camcorder G1000 and want to transfer them onto computer for easy access for children/relations. got a so called usb convertor from amazon but no joy, doesn't transfer the video only the sound which is not much use. Has anyone experience of doin this and what equipment/software did they use. BTW works fine putting video lead into smart and playing through a tv from the camcorder so presume the lead I originally had is fine. Thanks

You could look for a cheap hdd/dvd recorder to do it. They were popular a few years ago and must be loads available. That way you can also do some cuts as you transfer to it as well.
I have done that with my Panasonic.

download a free recorder (PC or MAC)

https://proav.roland.com/global/products/vr-4hd/downloads/

there's several but the roland is the simplest to use try your USB thing again... it might like that codec better...

hook up the camera to the USB, select the USB on the recorder as the imput....

obviously you need to make sure the analog video cable is connected and working.... red and white are audio yellow is video... hook it up and it'll capture it's a very simple process, in real time and you can see the file as it's being captured... in the proeview window...

material is saved to folder in movies on a mac... label them to make finding the files later simpler (also back that up to another drive or online service)

Watching this thread with interest as I have some of my late Fathers to look at, although I am a bit concerned what might be on some of them! :augie

it's really very similar to making a recording of a vinyl onto tape.... that's about the best way to look at look at it

if you use some expensive stuff you can make a suedo HD (720P) file it can help, plus if it's once in a life time footage it's worth it I guess

Well update the dongle thing from amazon £13.99 works perfectly I just had the wrong lead from the hi8 camcorder to it!! I'd been trying a 3.5mm jack into red, yellow and whit leads which then went into the usb dongle thing. When I used a 3.5mm jack to yellow (Video) and single white (audio) lead it transferred perfectly although all in real time. Makes me annoyed that I didn't record more!! some great memories. So now have all those videos as mp4s, all the videos from the go pro, videos from cameras, Flip videos (which are the best quality) and iPhone/phone videos. Now just need to learn how to edit it all!! Any suggestions for digital editing? Thanks for all your help as usual.

depends if you us a PC or Mac bothhave free software which is mostly good use the ripple edit function

import the whole clip, then edit the boring crap out using the ripple function it's really simple all you need is time and a quick is machine, save the project onto a spare disc so you don't funk up the original... and save in movie and whatever edit package your have... on the new disc. cos it will crash

loads of tutorials on youtube on the different stuff....
