Hi, as usual i bought a set of H4 hids off fleabay nice and cheap, but didn't read all the details, :mmmm so only got a single beam unit instead of the hi/lo.

So basically is there any small H4 units I can convert to HID, or shall I just sell on and buy the proper ones, as my 650GS lights are worse than useless in these conditions (shift working all year round too) trawled fleabay and only get the lamps and getting fed up now :blast :blast

Send them back to the supplier, I always take returns if any problems :thumb2

a single beam unit isnt hi-lo?,
so isnt an h4,
so what is it?

I bought exactly as described, a single beam H4, (didn't state that in the description, just said H4 hid??) therefore no returns (had it a while now too) it was my mistake, didn't realise H4 came with only a single filament, thought it was always a 'hi' and 'low' in one lamp. just me being a dumbo, so fleabay it is then, might try here first??

I don't know how things are on a 650, but 1200s have separate lights and bulbs for high and low. If your bike isn't like that and the vendor won't take it back in exchange for the kit you would have asked for if he'd been a bit more specific, you could always try selling it to a 1200 owner.

1200s don't use H4 fitments, though, they're H7.

It's an H4 fitment with only one burner position, so only provides dip beam.

As I understand it the H4 HID is a single beam unit but has a 'shroud' move up and down the lamp using a solenoid to move the focus (from dipped to main).

Cheap H4s off Ebay

You are not the only one to make this cockup. I did the same, But the pair only cost me £25.00 delivered from Hong Kong.

So I contacted a company in England who offered H4 HI/LO burners & installed them with the ballasts already bought.

Good money after bad.

The burners bought gave such a lousy beam pattern the much brighter lights were actually much worse to drive with than the previous halogens. ( Dip or main beam)
After 10 hours use one of the lights failed. ( Should have mentioned they were on a car)
Totally disgusted, I bought 2 off 55w HID H4s from Les Wassel of this Parish.
Kit was expensive, but excellent.
That was 3 weeks ago. I finally got round to installing them on Saturday afternoon.
Left car till today. Left site at 5.30 to test the lights on the way home.
Whilst in a queue travelling at 30 mph I hit the biggest pothole I have ever hit in my life, & wrecked a rim & tyre.
Abandoned car till morning, without ever getting to see how good they were, but preliminary viewing suggests Les Wassel's have an excelent beam pattern.

h4

Never seen a single filament h4 , they have always been dual filament hi -lo.
Some bikes use h4,but only wire up one beam, some have one wire missing from the plug.
h4 hid sometimes have a electric motor or solenoid to physically move the bulb up and down to get low or hi beam.
This is a h4 bulb, complete with 3 pins here.
this is an h7 bulb
