Just a quick recommendation for the service at Motorbike Adventures. Mick fitted some HiDs and Hella fogs recently and all is lovely and bright. Nice guy, good coffee, great service and the brackets for the Hellas look much better than any others I've seen.

The original ballast units were a bit temperamental but Mick came out and fitted some upgraded expedition units for free.

Just a pleasure to deal with.

OK, had chance to try out the new lamps over the festive period - here's my verdict (for what it's worth...):

Bike is 2001 R1150GS.

Pros:
Came back home from "oop north" via the B1257, over the moors and through Helmsley & Malton - normally I would be pretty slow an such a twisty road at night. The HIDs are MUCH brighter so that, with both lights on a clear bit of road with no oncoming traffic, enabled me to ride almost as if it were daylight. Worth every penny for this.

Cons:
Main is slow to warm up if it has been off for more than a few seconds. I didn't use a stop-watch, but we're talking about 3 seconds to useful brightness, maybe total 8-10 seconds to maximum brightness. After that, it's less than a second to useful brightness, after you have dipped for an oncoming vehicle for example.

Not the HID's fault, but it makes the narrowness of the main beam even more evident - the beam spread should be twice as wide.

Owing to the extreme brightness, it is important to adjust dip very carefully to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic. This will need readjusting if you load up the bike with luggage or pillion (or if, like me, you put on a few pounds over Xmas ;) )

Conclusion:
Overall much better and I would recommend converting both lamps to HID.

I'm considering more lights to address the above - maybe a pair of halogen spots to cover for the main until it warms up and perhaps LED position lights so I don't dazzle others in town or during the day.

OK, it's crazy - better lights means I need even more lights! I did have a pair of cheap ebay halogen fogs, which I didn't find to be much use, so they are scrap now.

Hope others find this helpful & illuminating :thumb:cool:

Quick question did you buy those HID's on your 1150 from this chap on here? Im sure his website said they take seconds to reach full brightness ;/ Want to get some for my F800GS but not sure if i should do full beam as well. Seems a bit pricey for both.

Regards

Ben

Hi Ben,
Yes, bought them from Mick on here (Motorbike Adventures). Very good quality kit and good service. Slow warm-up time is a characteristic of HID lights and I believe Mick's are among the fastest.

On balance, I believe the extra brightness outweighs the initial slow warm-up. Remember it's only the first time that you switch on main beam - when you're riding an unlit road, they come back more or less instantly after dipping for oncoming traffic.

Expensive, yes - but cheaper than fixing the bike you run into the ditch because you can't see the corner :D

HTH.

Ian

Ahh i see, thought they were instant :blast. Very true will look at getting some as the standard F800GS field of beam is as poor as 1980's candle lit bike! Not happy for £7000+!

Yes, 1150's the same - you'd think BMW would manage to improve their lights over 10 years, wouldn't you?

This is a good illustration of the difference:

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the feedback it was an interesting read. Its also important to note that the 800 and 1200 need a good can-bus ballast to work properly. The quality of the components that we use to build our HID’s dictate the final price to the consumer. You can get very cheap kits on the market made with very cheap components 9 times out of 10 they won’t work with BMW bikes, and if they do they fail soon after fitting. Thats why our kits are a little more money backed up by our years warranty.

We also now have the mk3 H7R anti Glare bulbs that work very well in reducing glare for on coming drivers and with the correct installation a copy can be found on our website www.motorbikeadventures.co.uk :eek:you should be up and running in no time.

Rich,

Looking at getting a HID kit however not sure if its necessary to do main and high beam. My parents said the high beam will be useless with the HID, is this true or can you just fit a Philips Xtreme bulb for an example to compensate the HID? Looking at over £100+ for both bulbs which is a bit much seeing as i would rarely use the high beam when you had a HID main beam.

Any advice on this, what would be best for me? :thumb

Hi Ben,

No Problems we can help out with advise just need to know what bike your kitting up, just year and model please! As for HID's on the main or not, Well Ian did a good objective write up a few posts up! In my view and having HIDs on my Adventure's main beam for is a plus! I have no problem waiting the 6-8 secs for the main to reach full brightness and when you do pass on coming traffic so long as the main has not been off too long its straight back to 100%.

Also for me personally i do a bit of adventure travel so I'm sometimes in places that i never come across other cars so i can leave main main on most of the time. Its down to choice at the end of the day and some people say tea do it some say no way, for me its a yes!

F800GS pal, yeah it seems advisable as there is no bulb on the market to replace the high beam that is going to be sufficient enough to produce extra light range. Therefore making the high beam pointless to have.

Hi Ben,

Here is the link to the HIDs that would work the best with your bike, its also worth getting an H7R up grade for the dip beam when you/if you order:- http://www.motorbikeadventures.co.uk/product.php?id_product=311
