HID conversion

enjoy em whilst you can ,,,

vosa just told me the after market hid will FAIL the mot ,poss dec 2011,
no ifs, no buts, hid=fail,
unless fitted as standard,,,,
the plans are drawn but not released yet, but i have seen them

Is that for cars as well?, seen a lot recently of the boy racer ilk that have very obviously aftermarket and very blue hids, pointing in all directions.

Guess its something to add to the list to swap prior to MOT, exhaust and now bulbs:confused:

it is definatley coming for cars, thats been drawn up and finalised,
probably because of the reasons you mentioned,:(
the bike hid part is not quite finalised but has been drawn up and approved now, so its just the date it comes in really,,
there will be a check in the mot rules to look for h i d lighting,
there is no exceptions on aftermarket, nothing will pass if the wording stays the same as i have seen

There's going to be an awful lot of people needing to buy replacement parts for their headlights when they have to change back :blast

Does it also include additonal lights such as fog and spots?

not really, u only need a bulb for the mot, easy changed...
spots etc, there was no mention of them,(so far) so if it isnt mentioned in the mot book, you dont test them,,,,

What are the grounds that they will deem they illegal?
I realise from looking a long time back that an installation required a mechanism for self levelling and also headlamp washers, at the time I had a 5 series estate that had airspings for load compensation ie self levelling and it had washers - I thought at the time I would have complied fully with the then requirements - swapped to a Merc with standard fit HIDs in the en(that wasn't the only reason for the change!!)

Here they are,
left side of the bike under the small plastic cover at the front of the seat.
Mines a 2010 GSA built in july.

I'll show them at the dealers, you live and learn :thumb2

I have just changed my 1150 Adventure for a 2010 1200 Adventure and was thinking of putting an HID dipped in.
Can anyone tell me if I need to fit a 55w, or can I fit a 35w without it causing a problem with the canbus system? Does that expect the headlight to draw 55w and flag up a problem is it doesn't?
Thanks in advance

35w in the fogs is plenty light, the lens is not that big for a 50w plus it is better on the canbus, some of the 2010 can be a little touchy with 4 x 50 w in the lights :thumb2

picture of my ss bracket for the GSA that will hold all 4 ballasts.

35w in the fogs is plenty light

I would totally agree with that :thumb2

Originally I asked Les to fit 50w Hids to the spots.....but in hindsight I'm glad I ended up with 35w's cos I think 50's would be too bright to be used as running lights. The 35w's are bright...but not too bright.

35w V 50w

Thanks guys, but I was meaning in the dip headlight rather than for the fogs.
I seemed to remember reading sompelace that if you only use a 35w HID to replace the 55w standard diped headlight bulb it could cause problems with the canbus due to the lower current draw, and that you should fit a 55w to keep the it the same?
Any advice Les?
Thanks again

The shop fitted 55w HID to both dip & main on my 10 GSA from new (swapped over from my 08 GSA) - Ive had no problems.

high bean is not the best anyhow, so I would opt for the 50 watt :thumb2
