Hi as title says HID upgrade, I Recently bought my brothers 1200gs on 62 plate and already has what look like a good setup on HID's but they are both 35w, I just want to up the high beam to 55w and wondered if anyone used F5 fast bright ballast? found a few on Ebay and they don't mention canbus, will it throw errors up?

Drop a PM to Les Wassall....he's an HiD expert & is not far from you (Congleton I recall)......sure he'd be happy to assist :thumb2
 
I have 35 watt HID from Les. They are at least 3 times brighter than the OEM halogens. Dip beam is so good that any more light would just create foreground dazzle. I'm sure that 55 watts in dip would be too much. Too much foreground light leaves you driving into what feels like a black hole.

The OEM headlight has too little angular separation between dip and main and its not possible to individually adjust the beams. With OEM bulbs main beam was all but washed out by foreground light from the dip beam and OEM auxiliary lamps. Fitting the HIDs put more main beam light down the road and solved the main beam problem. I fitted long range LED spot lamps in place of the OEM floods. These fire up instantly whereas the HID takes a few seconds.

In short, I think the 35 watt HIDs are more than good enough. If you want more main beam, get some long range LED spots that you can aim to where you need the light.

I do know of officers now who will when checking vehicles at the roadside through MID ask if it has any modifications listed (especially boy racers with lowered suspension etc and those who fail the attitude test). If the answer comes back no mods notified and as such the company concerned considers the vehicle uninsured as a result of failure to disclose the driver is prosecuted for driving without and the vehicle seized.

I have not heard of HID's in particular but other lighting issues yes. Maybe Euro marked auxiliary lighting may be a safer bet for some.
 
I fully agree that a badly installed HID will affect the lamp focus and cause dazzle. However that article says that HIS will damage a halogen lamp housing due to excess heat and UV light. My HID uses less power and delivers more light so the heat output is probably less than 50% of the halogen bulb. Also halogens emit UV (though likely less than a HID) so the lamps have to be compatible.

My GS headlight dipped beam has a slightly fuzzy cut off line compared to the halogen but its absolutely not any more dazzling. I've recently had the headlight off the bike and reset the beams slightly low. I've never had anyone flash me for dazzling but with the lower beam angle I have noticed more near smidsys. I'm sure there is a sweet spot between "ignore him his lights are useless" and "what a twonk with his main beam on all the time".
 
I fitted some of Les Wassals 55W main/dipped and 35W fogs to my GSA after seeing Alleycams setup from HID50 on a bike tour.

I had to dip the headlight by a couple of clicks to avoid dazzling, but they are so much better than the OEM headlights.

The HID fogs are more than bright enough at 35W.
 
I should add that my MoT tester was perfectly happy with my HIDs. They are not too blue and are not causing dazzle but they are more distinct so as far as he's concerned they are ideal. The rider can see better in the dark and other drivers can see the bike more easily in traffic.
 
I have a pair of Les's 50w bulbs in my headlight and you certainly get noticed!
Mine were tested at a government MOT testing centre a couple of months ago. We do it differently in N. Ireland. Passed with no comments.
 
Mine have passed the MOT for the past two years too - no issues.

I also never get flashed by cars, unlike when I'm in my car with OEM xenons where I get flashed on a regular basis (garage says they are aligned correctly but it's a 4x4 so the height causes dazzling at some angles I think)
 
Dome great answers to hids but going back to original question, would the ballast I post flash up on the canbus?

I would say that if they don't mention canbus then go elsewhere. There are plenty to choose from.
Btw I have 35w 6.000k on 2 of my bikes and my car and they are all plenty bright enough.

I just put the item number in to eBay and the item that came up says it is canbus compatible :nenau
 
hi, got a mate who fitted HID on 1200GS. while on M.way, transformer caught fire. If you fit one, make sure transformer is in direct airflow to keep it cool. I bought a kit, but decided not to risk it. Worth thinking about .....
