HID50 v. MotorbikeAdventures

Hi Stephen,

You pays your money you makes your choice.:nenau

Basically are you doing the install yourself? or will the supplier be doing it for you?

If the supplier is doing it, then who is the closer for time considerations, or do you fancy a nice long ride to Les?

Neil

PS
They're both good:thumb2

Doing it yourself then you may want to consider the following on ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/35W-HID-XENON-SLIM-BALLAST-KIT-H7-6000K-2-Bulbs-8000K-/260685745913?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cb214cef9

Just fitted a set to my girlfriends F650GS twin. No CANBUS issues, slim balasts, door to door in a week, no additional tax to pay - couldnt ask for anything more. All for £32 - what do the two suppliers that you mentioned want for two bulbs/balasts?

Went for 35w as some of the more powerful kits have been known to scorch the reflector of the F800/F650 headlinghts.

Cheers

Holy crap they're cheap!

The prices from the above firms range from £60 - £80 for 50-55w 6000k HID and they look VERY similar to their kits. HID50 do the 35w kit for £60 each (£120 pair).

I've thought about the scorching problem but I've heard that this is very rare? How is the quality of the kit you've used and what about the light output of the 35w?

I’ve a 55w HID on my R1200GS (purchased from SUBZERO, who is a member on this site). They’ve been on my bike for approx 1.5 years and I fitted them myself. Cost under a ton if I remeber correctly. No problem so far.

When looking for Helens bike I took a punt on the ebay ones and I’m happy I did as I’ve had no problmes to date. Light output wise, having seem both a 35w and 55w setup, there is a slight difference but not so much that I’d rave about having 55w over 35w.

and they look VERY similar to their kits

I’m sure someone will be along to say its the quality of compnents in the balast that matters, but for £32 I’d just buy another set if they failed + I’d still be ahead on costs!

FYI: The headlight cover caps that you have to drill during the install can be had for under a fiver a piece from BMW. Some sellers on this site use the fact that they supply 'plug and play' kits with pre-drilled caps to add many ££££ to the price.

Cheers

I've had HID kits on my 1150 GSA for the past 3 years, headlight (dipped and main 55w) as well as 35w kits in my Micro DE's all bought from HKG on Ebay. Cost less than £100 for both ballasts including shipping and never had a problem with them since.... Do a search on here for HID kits as there's loads of info about. As previously stated you pays your money and makes your choice..... You'll find loads of bollox about the insides of the more expensive kits being "military spec":blagblah:blagblah:blagblah etc but mine are obviously from the same supplier in HKG as they still work fine after 3 years and were less than half the price:thumb2

You are all right, "you pays your money" as for spec I cannot speak about other suppliers gear, but our internals are from the EU and we have the kits assembled in HK for cost purposes, we like to try and give first class back up, full warranty on all the bits and usually always at the end of the phone for any advise, prices you quoted are the web prices and we charge a less for the forum.

We have been trading on the forum for the last seven years so you know we are not just here with a few kits and gone next week.

We like to think our kits are the dogs so much so we hope to be sole provider very soon to another very busy dealer who also sells on the forum but wants total quality and reliability :thumb2 looking forward to supplying them :D

Right on q, there is the internal component argument

Don’t get me wrong I’m sure they are high quality, I’m sure the internals are made in the EU and assembled in HK to cut costs  (so you don't trust our Asian friends to make the bits, but they are good to put them together?) – and good backup service is provided. But lets face facts, these items are dirt cheap to buy and piss easy to install.

My option is that you pay a lot for the unique selling points as mentioend by Les, the main ones being support, warranty and the supposed differentiation in component quality. But if you are getting 2 x ballasts/bulbs for half the price of one les/adventure warehouse options, all you’re really paying for is the support. My experience to date would leave me to belive that limited support is needed with these items, just some common sence :thumb.

Les: I’ve never seen a definitive UKGSER price list published on the forum :nenau. Out of interest, what are costs for your kits on a like-for-like bases to the ebay link? Could you post the price in the thread?

Cheers

Motorbike Adventures

Wow didn’t realise this debate was in full swing until today! Not much I can add to what has already been said! Apart from the fact that just like Les we sell our kits with service and support top of the agenda! I have seen the HID 50 lights and they look excellent units, at the same time we feel we also supply excellent units. So as most people seem to be saying, your considerations are:- Fitting yourself? Or asking us to fit? Who you live closer too maybe, and what you want to pay in terms of money. We only supply 55 Watt units at 6000k as in our opinion the 6000k looks the whitest light and we replace the same wattage bulbs that came out of the unit originally, we charge £59 per unit plus £25 per unit for fitting. We come to you if you don’t want a ride out! And we charge £0.45ppm for providing this mobile service!
Our lights do need to go up due to a VAT and shipping increase in the New Year but we are trying hard to keep them at their current price. There are some very cheap kits on eBay which may not work with the BMW canbus system and bring up LampF warnings so I think it’s better to buy from myself or Les as you know we guarantee our products and provide great support and help when needed.
Best Regards
Mick

LampF messages

Can anyone using the HID lamps from Motorbike Adventures in a CANBUS equipped 1200GSA confirm whether or not they get LampF messages?

I mailed Motorbike Adventures with this question via their website earlier this week but haven't had an answer yet.

I'm inclined to buy a single HID unit from them as I do not want to fit one to the main beam unit. Thus, buying a pair from Les is not an option.

TIA

Richard

I belive we spoke and confirmed that you get no canbus warning light. All our kits work with BMW bikes same as our leds. If you need anymore info just mail or call.

Hi Mick

Yes we did. I'm now the proud owner of an LED unit for the parking light and an HID unit to replace the dip beam lamp.

Almost instantaneous delivery after placing the order - what more can one want?

Cheers

Realistically, you'd want BMW to fit decent lights in the first place! :augie
