I was having a chat with a colleague at work last week about HID's. He has just bought a Triumph Speed Triple :drool (all matt black and carbon) and was thinking abouy HIDing the lights. I told him about the kit I bought from E bay and today received a link to the bods st the DfT explaining their views on aftermarket HID kits..........:augie

Made for some interesting reading.....

I've got a feeling that this applies only to cars and the units on bikes are rated differently.

There was a thread a while back about it where the relevant docs and references were dug out about it :)

however, on my light meter, my HID,d 1150 makes a superior pattern to a normal bulb set up, with less stray light,
its all very well them grouping everything together , but sometimes they are wrong, besides, theres no law against it, and they will pass an m o t

Totally agree Digger, my GSA is fully HID'd and sailed hrough it's MOT last year with no questions asked.....

Just thought it made some interesting reading for anyone who is thinking of HIDing their bike.....:thumb

Its the same old carp thats regulary rolled out, have seen it dozens of times, strictly speaking there is a lot of stuff out there that is not type approved, therefore making it illegal to fit, but we have yet to see the MOT being used to check the conformity of every single item fitted to vehicles, meaning that if HID's are illegal, then so are luggage, extra lights, or anything else fitted, that you dont have a certificate of conformity for :augie

My 1150 and 1200 both passed MOTs with HID lights, not even a murmur from the tester.

In their opinion...

Which is all it is. I can't find ANY case law where the police/DfT etc have taken someone to court over aftermarket HID fitments.

Considering jsut how far such a test case would go, I can't see any plod being bovvered. Certainly, all the traffic plod I've ridden past weren't.

My bike has just passed its second MOT with a dipping HID fitted, no even a comment.

You've got an 1100 with a single bulb, so when you say dipping headlight how does that work? And has it been reliable?

it dips on the bulb,a magnet pulls it back, v reliable,
some bulbs are crap though, the type mr wassel does fit properly, some dont,

Mine flies through every year, on both bikes. I dont know anybody that has had a issue with a MOT yet.

At the end of the day the only time the police are going to have a issue is if your lens is unsuitable for HID and is sending stupidly bright light out in every direction when your running on dipped. If your blinding folk then its a problem, and if your not then why would anybody stop you?

Myself, Les, and others will confirm that on the 1150 and 1200 and many other bikes the light pattern is fine and you wont end up blinding anybody unless you delibertly apply high beam. :augie

If your in doubt about the beam pattern ask for a dry fit or ask another HIDified owner of the same bike and when you park next to a wall you can tell straight away.

See the pics in my signature for the difference and its all clear then.
