UK again Pah!..
1150GSA - Just fitted a HID on the dip and at the same time checked my TT light protector - it is the plastic one that is held off on two spacers. I was going to leave it off, but after giving it a clean I noticed a couple of good graunches on it so it has been doing it's job.

So it is back on and I will continue to use it, now I know they are not TUV approved but do they make much difference to light scatter and how much will it reduce the effect of the HID by? Yes I know I can just take it off again and try it but I wondered if anyone has any views on this?

Cheers

Glad to hear you got the HID mod done buddy.
Take the headlight protector of and you will find the lights are alot better. I have removed mine. I also noticed that you don't get the light bouncing up the inside of the screen. I would guess that a good portion of the light is refracted back up the screen, hence the lower output of the lights when the light protector is fitted.
I'll put mine on for the off road trip next year, but until then it's daylight all day long.

I convereted my adv over to HID on both main and dip, i took the advise off this forum and shortened the spacers to bring the perspex protector almost touching the headlamp glass.
Its a bit fiddly but looks much better as the perspex is level with the cowl over the instruments so no glare projected back.
I dont have a picture right now .but could if it would help

I took it out Friday night for about 40 miles of back lanes and it was not as good as I had hoped for, loads of reflected light and because I have the preload on the rear wound up to max it points the lights down too much, I did however see the advantage under acceleration and I think moving the plastic cover as you describe and adjusting the lights will make a big difference.

One thing I did notice is the colour, I am running 6000K and it is white with a tinge of Blue and makes ordinary lights look like yellow glow worms.

Right, I am off to find the angle grinder...

I must admit after fitting the HIDs to both main and dip to my bike i spent ages re-setting the lights.
I set them up one at a time, ie set the dip and the unplug and set main, you will need to do this with the small adjusters through the cowl.
Make sure these adjusters are free and you have the correct fitting screwdriver as the adjuster are very soft.
Doing it this way will give you the best advantage of the more powerfull lights, to me its the best money i have ever spent on the GS.

You get more lumens from a 4100k bulb than the 6000k that could be why you haven't seen the improvement some of us have. Obviously, setting them up correctly will also make a massive difference. Keep persevering though cause they should be mega. I only did the dipped beam but I am now looking to do the full beam.
I also need a pure white LED for the side light. Anyone know what type I need?

A quick update to confirm that a couple of tweaks of the adjuster and.... DAYLIGHT! Well maybe not daylight but serious light, and I kept the plastic guard in place. :) :)

Has anyone tried a HID on maim beam on the 1150's?

I've got one on at the moment - great when its fired up loads more light - serious daylight thing going on, but the ballast I've got on it looses the high voltage charge over time and so it's not a near instant illumination if its not been used for 5 mins or more - takes a while to get back up to full intensity...jury's still out.

I've got two different ballasts - one is a Pilot (currently on the dip) I'm going to try swapping them over and put the Pilot on the main and see if a different ballast makes any difference - can't do it till the w/e though.
