HIDs interferring with instruments

Recently fitted a pair of HIDs to my GS. As usual the difference is fantastic. However I have a problem...

Dipped is fine but when I put the main beam on I lose the instruments, speedo, tacho and the instrument back lights. Switch the main beam off, then second or two later the instruments recover and continue as if nothing has happened.

I played around abit today on a short ride out and discovered that if I put the main beam on (instruments fail) then turn them off again after about ten seconds the instruments recover and I can use the main beam without any further failures - until I leave the main beam off for a few minutes.

I have mounted the ballasts on top of the headlight housing and the cables from the main beam run very close to the instrument housing.

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Fitted mine a few months ago, no problems here, my ballasts are fitted with the bracket under the oil cooler.

HID interferance

Having played exeensicely with 7 varied units around a year ago, I found that 1 out of the 7 caused problems. (with autoswitch unit.) see my posts of aroudn a year ago for details.
It would appear thet the problem is that some ballasts generate harmonics.
Ther eis no easy solution.
Suggest you Swap dip & main & see does the problem move with the change. If it does, complain to supplier.
3 off Chinese did not cause problems, 1 out of 4 hellas did.

I have heard from a friend in the US of "spurious" ballast resistors causing issues with sat navs.....

Is your unit from a known source with an EEC approval classification??? I'm sure we all know of potential issues on equipment from the far east that is supplied in kits

As i don't have HID's it's only guess work I'm afraid.

The next step though is a process of elimination..
Disconnect the power supply to the ballast with the engine running & see if the problem changes.
Try re positioning the ballast to see if he problem changes

If it does either mount it in a different place or get it changed.

Thanks guys,

They are from Europe. I will be playing over the next few days with swapping and/relocating the ballasts etc. If it points to the ballast I will contact the supplier and see where we go from there.

Re mount

Bet ya £10 if you re-mount them away from the clocks it'll be fine, apparently they emit a huge EMF (electro magnetic field) on start up, it affected my 1150 as they are mounted under the clocks faring and above the head light, i fiddled with position till they were OK(ish) all they occasionally do on the 1150 is muck up/freez the RID unit (pull fuse to reset), if you start the bike with the main beam on, check out previous posts for more info, dunno it the canbus sys on 1200 makes them more sensitive, hope this helps, merry crim, n appy new year to all Dus

I would go with Dusan on this one. The instruments are self contained with their own computer and they get their information via a network (CAN) if there is a lot of noise in the network your instruments wont get any info or get garbled info so might fail safe and shut down. Its kinda the same as a laptop can disconnect from WIFI if you turn the microwave on. Moving the ballasts or shielding them should sort the problem. A lot of bikes wont even run if HID ballasts are too close to the ECU, Yamaha's TDM being one of them as I found out.
