Has anybody got experience of fitting a HIDS4U kit onto a GS1150. I'm wanting to inprove the dire lights and these seem reasonably priced. I'm not much of a mechanic or sparky, so how easy are they?

Got a set fitted, good result :thumb if you do a search there is a couple of threds on the subject ;)

:D

Just fitted

I've just finished fitting a single dipped unit (with e-help from Les Wassal - thanks Les)

I'm quite impressed with the intensity of light. Still have the inherent problem with the beam pattern, but only a new lens will fix that. There's a definite improvement in my opinion. I'm quite happy with it. :D

The ballast seem quite big on the latest pilot kit so I've mounted my unit under the beak.

See bargain prices for details of Ian at hids4u special deals for us...

I'll post some photos once I resize them and work out how to do it.

Got a set for mine sitting in the garage..

If anyone around the Herts, Essex Area Knows the best fitting and wants to give me a hand it would be appreciated.....

Got a 2004 GSA.... with abs...

Easy ish.

How well do they work on the high beam, (flash :D ) as they take a second to get to full light,

I have both ballasts fitted side-by-side under the beak. They are held there by a stainless bolt and nyloc nut at each end, thus four bolts hold two ballasts.

Use a heated 22mm piece of copper pipe to 'burn' a hole through eac of the plastic covers at teh back of the lights. You can fit the power connectors on to the BMW connectors inside the plastic cover.

Fit the rubber grommet in the hole you made in the lamp covers, and feed the leads from the ballst to the HID lamp, and the power leads from the OEM lamp fitting TO the ballast unit through the grommet.

Carefully insert the HID lamps in the OEM fittings to replace the H1 lamps, and Hey Presto!!!!!!!!!

It would be worth gathering any excess cable and using some cable ties to hoik it all up under the instrument panel as far as possible, for neatness.

It won't take you above an hour to fit - or at least it took me little more than that when I did it first last spring.

If push came to shove, I'd be happy to wander up your way to give you a hand.

I've had a mainbeam HID unit in my bike from new.

It's only the first activation of the beam that has any noticable pause, it seems that once used, it lights-up as quickly as a normal unit.

I'd strongly recommend you don't do it!

Invest some extra cash and get a replacement main beam unit, (I got the TT unit - dead simple to fit, just plugs in), which will not only give much more light but will give a much better spread.
For me the biggest issue was the beam pattern - fitting an HID replacement into the same lens/body won't change the light pattern.

So before you buy, be sure about what you want. Improved vision is as much about pattern and spread of light as it is about intensity.

Other options include HID spots, again be sure to check beam pattern - projector beams may not be the ideal solution.

For non HID solutions try checking BTBRs threads. :thumb

Just my opinion, it's your money and you know what you want. :D

I've had a HID4U bulb fitted to my dipped beam all winter and it does make a big difference.

The beam is stronger and does have slightly more range. It also picks out reflective roadsigns and car numberplates from a much greater distance than the standard bulb.

Burfcontrol is right in saying that the HID won't change the beam pattern. The design of the headlight is still the limiting factor BUT the HID does make a very noticable difference and is definetly worth the cash.

V Easy to fit. The ballast pack can fit under the light fittings in the cockpit and the wiring is just a matter of plugging/ unplugging leads.

You'll need to drill a large hole in the back of the headlight bulb cover as HID bulbs are much longer but the gromit supplied with the kit fits very well.

Thanks for the input. I followed the link and ordered a single HID for the dip beam. I'll wait and see how it performs before deciding whether to order one for main beam. At the moment I have a pair of Halford's Ice blue spots wired in and main is pretty OK. There was mention of a TT main beam, but is that a HID kit or a redesigned lamp unit?

Is there a replacement lens/light unit that can be bought e.g. Hella etc that any one knows of :mmmm

The TT main beam is a redesigned HID lamp unit. It is a direct replacement for the original, simple enough to fit, all connections are plug and play, no cutting, crimping or soldering. :thumb only fiddly bit is the bolts to mount the ballast - I ended with one bolt and cable tie, still rock solid after 60,000 odd miles.

I've bought a few 'toys' over the years - autocom, radar detector, tobinators, H&B bars etc... and if I could only keep one this would be it.

Cheers Jim

I agree

i fitted both dip and main, very happy

i fited the ballast units in the section of frame behind the alternator, one on each side, quite easy, obviously the tank will need to be removed, but plenty of room, and they are out of sight.
Word of caution, fit the wires first before securing the ballasts as the main beam connection needs and extra couple of inches of wire to the dip as the lamp is more shallow

have pics on the ballast mounting, but dont have time now to begger about making them small enough, PM and i will mail them to you if interested

Are there any issues at MOT time with HID lights? I seem to recall mention of some but no clear answer.

No problem, told them at the garage a HID was fitted, passed :thumb
